Hi guys..
i started rehearsing with a group playing something like funk-punk, 1 month ago, and i realised that whenever we play in the studio my lips getting almost burnt... i have to play higher to hear myself and my range isn't that great...
i don't hear exactly what i'm playing and so i have to blow harder and to play a little more violently(?)...
the thing is i thought that some different type os mouthpiece would give me a "better" sound, maybe lift the bass or the treble so to hear it better...

is that possible?
right now i use my standard Schilke 14 and test a STOMVI Solo 2C (i don't remember exactly the model - i bought for no specific reason in frankfurt)


I'm not a pro player. just getting better...

Before changing gear, you should talk to your band and tell them you are having trouble with their volume levels. Maybe you should just get a mic setup, or they can turn down a bit.

yeah this is what i surely must do..
but is it possible changing the mouthpiece to change in that way the sound?

thinking about all these i realised (or it came to me that me lower lip doesn't fit quite well in the SCHILKE 14... it may be that my embouchure isn't too tight yet but i'm looking for a larger one.. from 17.02 to 17.12 maybe...

i'm looking for a MARCINKIEWICZ which at least look pretty nice...
by the way what is that drill venturi that i keep seeing and my Schilke chart doesn't refer to?

If you find yourself playing loud and high in this band you should tailor your equipment for the type of playing you are doing.

If you like the Shilke 14, try a Shilke 14A4a. This is more of a lead mouthpiece with a shallower cup anf tighter more efficient backbore. The rim is also a little flatter which should be a little more comfortable.

I think your problem more about monitors. Make sure you can hear your self in the monitor. Another thing you can do is put a reflector on your microphone or use a music stand to reflect some more of your acoustic sound back to you. We used to make relflectors out of clear plexi-glass, but you can purchase them now. When I play with loud rock bands, i prefer to use in-ear monitors. You have to mix your own sound or have a lot of confidence in your sound guy.

Yeah, is this a recording studio, or a practice studio? If a recording studio, there is no reason in the world that you shouldn't be able to hear yourself through a monitor. In the practice studio, the solution is easy--take away the vocalist's mike and/or monitor and make everyone play softer (and thereby listen more!). If a hardship for anyone, it will be the drummer, but even they can play quietly (the best ones can, anyway). A surprising number of guitar players hate playing acoustic because the sloppiness of technique can't be masked (a surprising number of they learn to lip read at an early age).

Practicing in this manner really sucks in the ego department, but is fantastic in the truth department. If your band is (or going to be) good you can pull off this kind of practice.
