Mouthpiece troubles

my band director told me to get on a 3C mouthpiece. I was using a 5B. After switching, I was unable to play as long, or as well with the 3C. Is this just part of switching mouthpieces?
Thanks!

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

Short answer - yes. The 3C will tire you more quickly until you adjust. Just practice as always and in a few weeks you'll forget you've switched.

Long answer - don't ask! Band directors have no business dictating mouthpiece choice (that's a funny word - since he didn't give you a choice). Your private teacher should be the one to work with you on this. If your director is also your teacher, and also a trumpet player, then maybe it's OK. Otherwise - talk to your (or get a) teacher.

It is cornet - with one "o".

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

It has to do with an idiot band director telling you to switch mouthpieces.

Were you having a specific problem with the 5B?

Is he a trumpet teacher?

Is he your private teacher?

How did he come upon that particular size mouthpiece?

I would go back to your original mouthpiece and get with a private teacher, or at least a mouthpiece technician.

You may not NEED to change.

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

My director is not my teacher and I do not have a private teacher. I had no problem with my 5B, he wanted all of our trumpet players to switch because it would give us a darker sound. I was doing great on my old mouthpiece, I switched back to it on Thursday to see how I would do; I played the best I have in a while.
If you have any more questions please ask! Thanks!

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

You will get a darker sound from the 5B. I hate to say it, but he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about!

Stick with the 5B. Unless he comes around and inspects your mouthpiece, he won't know what you're playing.

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

Another question. I'm currently playing a Cornet(thanks veery) and am using a Cornet mouthpiece(obviously). I was wondering, if i buy a 5B Trumpet mouthpiece, will it feel the same?

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

A Bach 5B cornet mouthpiece and a trumpet 5B mouthpiece should feel the same. Don't switch to the 3C if you play better on the 5B. It sounds like your band teacher is definitely not a trumpet player.

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

Schwab was correct--a 5B has a bigger cup volume than a 1C! Stick with your 5B and have your director log on to Trumpetmaster!

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

I have another question. Are the other trumpet players playing trumpets or cornets? IMO there is a much more distinct sound difference between the "native" cornet sound of your Yamaha and that of a trumpet, more than the sound difference between the 5B and 3C on either kind of horn. I suppose it is not reasonable (not that this person is reasonable) to ask you to change to a trumpet to unify the sound.

Many who are not well informed believe the sound is mostly the product of mouthpiece choice. But the horn itself is a big factor, and the major factor of all is the player. In his eagerness to unify the trumpet section's sound he is going to create problems, not solve them.

I am curious - what grade level is the band, and what kind of music are you playing. Are you marching or sitting?

Vulgano Brother's suggestion for you to suggest he join TrumpetMaster is a very good one. We would welcome it.

Re: Mouthpiece troubles

My Band Director is a Trombone player. He may have told me to switch because they teach students here on a 5C. We are an eight grade band. We are a sitting band, though we play many marches and we occasionally play with the high school in the stands at games.
