Which Mouthpiece is your must have?

Monette, Bach,Black,GR- so many of us have the mouthpiece that "works" but we never get the "best" for us -what do you think?

Re: Which Mouthpiece is your must have?

I tend to stick with a mouthpiece that has no shortcomings, and work on my own shortcomings with it. Once I have one that gives me a decent range, a good tone, and good intonation, the rest is up to me. I've played the same mouthpiece on my 43 Strad for more than 20 years now - an old Bach 3C.

Re: Which Mouthpiece is your must have?

I love my Amati 7C. It is a bit longer than the traditional Bach. It tends to warm the sound up for me a bit more than I can normally achieve with the Bach mouthpieces. The Amati 7C is also very easy on my chops and I last about a 1/3 longer than I normally do. Why? no clue but it just does for me. Of course what is good for me is never awesome for the next person in line, but it is always good to take your trumpet to a music store to try various mouthpieces. It is good to do like a "playoffs" to find the "one".

Purviance 5
NY Bach 10 1/2C

They get the job done (most of the time) for me.

Warburton anchor grips work wonders for me... big lips and everything, they fixed a lot of my previous problems i was having before the switch

Boy Dale, that's just about perfectly said!

I'm in the Bach 5 range diameter wise and have no plans on switching.

Your premise is wrong. You will NEVER know if you have the best because you cannot objectively measure what makes a mouthpiece best for you AND there is no way to engineer a failsafe comparison ruling out personal inconsistencies and aging effects.
I think that players searching for the holy grail are wasting time. If you look at what the pros playing the type of music YOU would like to play are using, you can use that info as orientation. The chance of you using something COMPLETELY different and fitting in is pretty remote.

My premise: what I use now is the best because I can get the job done and contractors keep coming back for more. Changing mouthpieces costs 6 months of less consistent playing - maybe just to find out that my old piece IS better. Pretty stupid odds.
If you do your homework, you will get close enough to do a great job. Forget the stupidity of a "best" mouthpiece. It just doesn't exist and even if it did, you could never be sure!

Re: Which Mouthpiece is your must have?

Hi,

The "perfect mouthpiece" doesn't exist as there is always one more to try. I've owned Bach, Jet-Tone, Blessing and Denis Wick.

Most of my playing is on cornet, so I enjoy playing Denis Wick 4, 4B and 4B Heavytop mouthpieces for my short-model Blessing cornet. I like Bachs for my long-model Conn cornet.

I know there are probably better ones today, but I tend to stick with a few.
As far as my short-model cornet goes, I like Denis Wick mouthpieces...now if I could afford a Sparx...that would be great!

Best wishes!

Re: Which Mouthpiece is your must have?

Maybe I misread your question, but if we were to eliminate all mouthpieces in the world except one, that one would probably be a 7C.
