![]() | mute i know there is a huge thread on "the best practice mute", but i was wondering if anyone could compare the volume of said mutes to the volume of a harmon (no stem). the volume of my harmon is about what i need (a little quieter would be good), but without the distorted sound and resistance. i thought that this might be the best way to get an accurate realization of the volume of these mutes. thanks!!!

![]() | Re: mute The only thought for a way to figure that out is to go to Radio Shack and buy a Decibel meter. (I think a digital one is around $60-$80 they also have an analog one) And try them with it. I have thought of buying one as a teaching tool. You know "See you aren't any louder/softer the meter didn't change" If you do this let us know the results Franklin

![]() | Re: mute I have a Yamaha Silent Brass system and find that it is quite a bit more quiet than the Harmon without stem, but I don't care for the wires and feel it is more stuffy than the Harmon. I can play on the first floor of the house while my family is sleeping without waking them, so that's what I usually do. If you find that you must always practice with a mute, be careful that you don't play too loud without it. It is also better to practice without a mute for overall tone production and intonation.
