Mute collection

I have an ever growing collection of mutes. Several straight, cup,Harmon, and such. What does everyone else have in their collection, and what is considered to be the standard selection? If there is such a thing as the standard or must have.

Re: Mute collection

In an orchestra that also plays pop concerts, at least two types of straight (pretty and nasty), Cup (H&B and Bach plastic for Fetes), Harmon (nasty), bucket and a felt hat for Gershwin.

We used to practice holding the straight mute behind the knee--it looks cooler than holding it between our legs.

Re: Mute collection

Let's see.... for the mutes I actually use, I have a Jo-Ral bubble, a Dennis Wick cup, a Tom Crown Straight, a Harmon 3-way (great for dance bands - cup is great for combo!), and a generic sink plunger. I also play a bucket mute of my own design - if things go well,I will start selling them in a few years! I also have a Tom Crown straight for picc, and life is complete with a silent brass for Bb and picc.
As for what I don't play, a Jo-Ral bucket ( a bohemoth compared to what I make!), various harmons, a jo Ral cup, stone lined cup, stone lined picc straight. Wanna make an offer on these? ;)

Re: Mute collection

I currently use the Trumcor Mutes which are expensive but totally worth it. I also use other companies such as Jo-Ral, Denis Wick, Montreal, Eric Ward, Bach, Humes and Berg, Marcus Bonna to name a few. I currently own just under 30 mutes.
Anyways, here is my stock mutes that I use most of the time.
Straight-Trumcor, Jo-Ral, Marcus Bonna (plastic) & Montreal; Cup-Denis Wick and Trumcor; Harmon-Jo-Ral Copper; standard sink plunger and a Crown Royal Bag as a felt hat.

Re: Mute collection

As money is an issue I have a very small collection of mutes but I'm always on the lookout for ones going cheap....

I currently own:

Straight:
Humes & Berg stone-lined
Denis Wick
Mike McClean
Vincent Bach Plastic

Cup:
Humes and Berg stone-lined
Vincent Bach plastic

Plunger:
Morrison's (UK supermarket chain) sink plunger (yellow)

Harmon:
Denis Wick
Selmer Styrotone

Practice:
Yamaha Silent Brass
Shhhhhhh! (belongs to my band technically)

and I'm awaiting a Denis Wick cup off a mate in return for some money off the trumpet I just sold him.
