Mutes?

I was wondering if there are any other commonly used mutes that I might need. I have a strait mute, a harmon mute, a bubble mute, a plunger mute, and my new bucket mute(that I didn't know existed until I got a piece of music two weeks ago). After discovering the bucket mute that I didn't know existed I wondered if there were any other mutes I might need.
Thanks,
Raeray!

Re: Mutes?

What kind of mutes you need ll depends on the kind of job you are on but it is good to have them all.

Re: Mutes?

You did not mention CUP mute...which of course is also a standard must have. Another common mute on many musical theatre shows is a SoloTone.

Check the dizzying list on the Humes & Berg (Stoneline mutes). You'll find many more you didn't know existed! ha. Still, there has been a use for most.

Good luck!

Re: Mutes?

I've had to use Straight, Cup Solo tone (or cleartone as H&B calls it), plunger, Harmon and in some cases a felt hat or crown (just put a crown royale bag over your bell)

I'm a mute enthusiast, I looked up the humes and berg list and decided to try and collect the crazy ones i'd never need because my luck if i didnt have them i know i'll end up needing them!! ;)

Re: Mutes?

The ones that are supposed to be required here at GSU (even though half the trumpet students dont have all of them) are Straight, Cup, Harmon/bubble, and Plunger is recommended. You may also want to get a felt derby for those rare times you see HAT in your music. I have never seen a bucket mute listed in a part, but I am sure they are in some music or else there wouldn't be a need for them. Some people also suggest to get both a Metal (aluminum) and Stone lined cup mute, as well as different brands and metals for straight mutes (all aluminum, copper bottom, brass bottom) to help with blending or to get a slightly different sound that comes with each.
