New cup mute question

I recently purchased a new H & B Cup mute to help matching in the big band I play in. I know I need to file the corks for intonation purposes. i did not ahve any issues with the DW cup but the new needs help. Does anybody have a suggestion on how much to file away?

Thanks,
Steve

File each cork evenly. The "cup" part of the cup mute should be about a quarter-inch away from the rim of your trumpet's bell.

When in doubt, find some expendable labor :) Friends work great for this

Re: New cup mute question

Stick it in the bell overnight to compress the corks. Then, file them down. I personally like it so the high points of the cup's rim almost touch the bell. That gives it some room for any additional cork compression and aging.

That's my preference.

Ditto.

When I get a new H & B cup, or most any new mute that needs filing, I leave it in my C trumpet, as tight as possible, for a day or two to really let the corks compress as much as possible. Then I file accordingly to fit whatever horn I intend the mute for.

Re: New cup mute question

I think with the H&B cup mutes, it is best to take the original corks off, and replace them with these: Ferree's tools mute cork. You can get them at WWBW and other places. they are long, but not a wide. They don't seem to break down and crack the the original H&B ones. You can play around with the placement to put the mute more or less in tune, then crazy glue them on.
