Plastic GR Mouthpieces

Hey all

I just did the coldest gig ever this morning. We played for the Govenor General of Canada arrival at Province House in Halifax, NS. It was a case of "rain or shine". We all knew that playing a gig outdoors in -25(c) in mid-Feb would have its problems. Sure enough.....

By the time we got off the bus and played our first song (Heart Of Oak) everything was frozen. In fact I was the only trumpet player whose valves were not frozen half way down. Needless to say we did not play any more music but we did stay outdoors for a bit. (Some of the lettering on the bass drum skin was falling off and one of our snare drums cracked right down the side).

Anyway, I looked online to see if GR makes Plastic mouthieces for future gigs like this. Brian Scriver got back to me with this.

I just thought I'd share this with those of you who do outdoor gigs/parades etc. Might be something well worth looking into. I think I am going to order one.

GR Lexan Plastic Rims

Good luck with all your winter outdoor gigs!

May I suggest removing all of the valve oil from your horn for any gigs below freezing? The monel piston has a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the brass sleeve. You shouldn't need valve oil because the clearance is going to get pretty tight. You'll have minimal air leaks. Give it a try and let us know how it works out.

Talk to the armourers. What do they do with automatic rifles in cold weather?

Seems very wise to me, particularly for a GR user, such as yourself. Others might consider the Kelly all-Lexan mpc. I never play in your circumstances, but if I did, I'd order a GR with the Lexan rim.

Re: Plastic GR Mouthpieces

I just ordered a Lexan rim from Mark Curry. I feel like that I'm allergic to metal pieces. My face feels a lot better on my cheap Kelly but the sound isn't strong enough on an all-plastic piece IMO.

I'm with you T, but some people love the Kellys. I don't understand why, but some people like it as their prime mpc.

The Kelly lacks depth and projection out in a hall IMO.

Re: Plastic GR Mouthpieces

I used to use the Schilke Delrin Rim when I was in the Army Band in the mid 70s. It saved my chops on more than one occasion. Back then I was using Al Cass or something equally thin. Worked real well in the cold. Even the trombone players switched to valve oil

Re: Plastic GR Mouthpieces

Trent,

Try a gold plated mouth piece. A good repair shop can do small plating jobs. Some people are sensitive to silver.

Re: Plastic GR Mouthpieces

I'm sensitive to both silver and gold. My doctor has advised me to not play on either...
Thanks though!

Re: Plastic GR Mouthpieces

Hey Trent:

There are a couple of great lead players in NYC who are now using stainless steel mouthpieces and love the power and projection.

They have their mouthpiecs made by a private producer in Penn.

The Loud Mouthpieces co. that advertises here now has a trumpet line available that are stainless steel as well.
