Can anyone explain the actual difference between a PRANA and the standard Monette mouthpiece?

The biggest differences are in the clarity, quickness of response, and a sparkling upper register. This is all relative, of course, because the standard Monette mouthpieces were a great improvement on conventional mouthpieces in those regards, as well.

The more relaxed a player is, the more he enjoys the Prana. It doesn't work well for players that are very physical. I think they find that the mouthpiece is resistant and fuzzy. You also need a lot of air moving through them but not necessarily for loud volume. Rather, it's for the largeness of the sound even when soft.

The upper register seems better-defined, too.

Not that Manny needs anyone to back him up, but I've found this to be especially true. I've been having problems with tension in my throat and was finding it difficult to play my prana mouthpiece on my heavy C trumpet. I borrowed a friends old non-Prana mouthpeice and everything work 100 percent better.

I currently play a GR 66C*, and I play mostly church gigs, wind ensemble and small group jazz. I'm looking for more versatile piece. Any suggestions on a Monette to try?

What do you use B4Sx?

(really, really bad... just couldn't resist. I promise to lay off coffee soon.)

From my experience last week trying a BUNCH of mouthpieces, the Prana seemed to have more of what Alex called "zing" to them. The slots on the Prana feel a bit smaller, and so upper register can be tricky. The finish is also different, too. The Pranas are scratched/brushed gold, where the non-Pranas are bright gold. And the cup does not have the circular machining lines in on on the Prana, either. All those things, I think, combine to make some (at least) of the difference.

Manny, is it really weird that I prefer my standard B1-1 to my PRANA B1-1S2 on my cornet? The brilliance of the PRANA just does not suit my cornet sound.

I bet the lack of lines in the cup is due primarily to the new CNC lathes Monette's using in his manufacturing.
