Preparation for Leather Valve Covers

I just received a new Leather Valve Guard from Leather Specialties. On the package, it suggests using a "tarnish remover or polish; then cover the area with a 'glaze'or coating containing a tarnish retardant before applying guard".

The guard is going on a Silver Plated Horn

Does anyone have any suggestions for the "Glaze"?

Use 3M's Tarnishield and use it normally. That'll leave a protective coating without the white film.

What do you have to do to lacquered horns?

I wipe the lacquer with a chamois whenever it gets any moisture on it. Most of the time I use my breath to fog any dried water spots then wipe off. If it gets greasy (over a few weeks) then I wash with lukewwarm water (not hot, hot will peel the lacquer off) and a little Dawn.

I don't have a problem with acid hands. If I did I'd wash way more often or get gold plate.

Hmm ... a little more Dawn or Gold Plate. That would be a tough question for someone with acid hands. Gold plate is at least $600 or more. I wonder how many bottles of Dawn that would buy? Hmmm .....

But then how would you justify the fact that you LIKE the gold plate?
