question about Cornet&Flugel mouthpiece I'm putting this question in two places hoping for a quick response. I'm using an old Rudy Muck 17C mouthpiece on my trumpet. I recently acquired a Conn Director Cornet without a mouthpiece. Should I get a Cornet mouthpiece comparable to my 17C or not? Same question for my Flugelhorn. If the cup is different than 17C will it effect my embochure negatively when I play the trumpet?

Re: question about Cornet&Flugel mouthpiece That's a pretty small mouthpiece - I don't know if you'll get the cornet and flugel "sounds" you're after with something that small. I play trumpet, cornet, and flugel on significantly different mouthpieces, and I would suggest using a substantially deeper cup at least. A cup diameter equal to the one you're playing would help maintain a decent high register, while the extra depth would fit the characteristics of a cornet and flugel a little better. Of course, mouthpiece recommendations over the net are usually worth what you pay for them, this one included!

Re: question about Cornet&Flugel mouthpiece Got it guys..........thanks. I guess there's not a lot of concern about "screwing-up" the embochure with that slight, but significant to horn characterist, variation in cup depth. Did I get it right?

| Fortissimo User | Re: question about Cornet&Flugel mouthpiece FWIWCFM I use a GR 66 on trumpet but a Sparx 4 which is equivalent to a GR 65 on cornet. The "very" slightly smaller diameter makes up for the loss of support from the much deeper cup. Haven't mucked about with the flugel mouthpiece yet; waiting until I can buy an Eclipse flugel before going down that road. The different diameters actually feel very similar (at least I can't tell the difference). Note to self: spend more time on cornet; it's fun. |

Re: question about Cornet&Flugel mouthpiece I guess playing with different mouthpieces may screw some people up, but I don't really have a problem with it. I may take a few minutes to acclimate to another mouthpiece I'm familiar with, but that's about it.

Re: question about Cornet&Flugel mouthpiece I'm taking a raggady mouthpiece and cutting, reaming, and smoothing it in my home workshop. I may get something without loosing anything. Have any of you guys ever tried playing Dr. Frankenstein with a mouthpiece?
