same rim?

whats up all? quick question...

I play Curry 5* an 5e for my Bb and pic
Should I stick with the same rim for flugel?
The Flugel I just bought came with a 3c and I cannot beleive how much smaller it is than my Currys.
I'm assuming the bigger rim and deep cup should really sweeten this already sweet horn.

BTW... anyone have a Curry 5_ for flugel?

Re: same rim?

I'd go with the Curry for flugel--having the same rim comes in handy for quick changes; Mark is a great guy that I don't mind getting richer. In theory, a 3 rim is bigger than a 5, but Mark makes a killer flugelcup--just be sure of letting him know which brand flugel it is, because flugel shanks do vary in size.

Have fun with your new horn!

Someone else told me that too, but two things

1.) when I put the 3c to my lips it feels so small compared to the curry 5

2.) on the MP express website the Curry 5's are .660" rim and the Bach 3 is .643", Bach 2 is .650" and the Bach 1 is .669"

If I remember by basic match skills, .660" is BIGGER than .643"

But feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!

Curry doesn't use the Bach thing and that's why he was confused...

but keeping the same rim can be handy as the poster above said for quick changes and not confusing your chops. A deeper (maybe v-shaped) cup will get you a better "flugel-tone"

Re: same rim?

I think using the same rim/rim size/rim shape is great place to start. Give it a try for a while. If it doesn't pan out to something usable, then find something that does work, regardless of rim size. If you do end up on a different sized rim, make sure you can do the switch from trumpet to flugel (and back) comfortably.

Oops! I was thinking of the Mt. Vernon rims Mark makes! Sorry! Still, I think you'll find Mark's flugel cups an improvement!

Re: same rim?

So I've wondered about this as well . . .

Schilke makes a flugel mp based on the 14A4A and has a 14A4X recommended for pic - for 14A4A players . . .

Now I put away my 14A4A and picked up a standard 14. We'll see where things go, but for the moment I wanted a good "standard" mp where I wasn't relying on the mp for anything. Anyway, assuming the 14 were the better mp for me, would you then get custom mp made from schilke I guess 14C3X would be the config for pic, and F14 would be the config for flugel???

Not that I'll be getting a flugel or pick any time soon, but it's one of those thoughts that keep buzzing around in my head.

Re: same rim?

I'm also one who plays the same rim for everything, a Bob Reeves 43with a medium trumpet cup, deep flugel cup, and shallow picc cup. It definately makes switching easier for me. I would definately reccomend getting the Curry equivalent for your flugel - you will be much more comfortable.
