Sanitizing Spray and Leadpipes?

Hi...I'm John and I am a compulsive sanitizing spray user....

I play lots of different Instruments and usually for a very short time on each one.
I generally hit them with a shot of Sanitizing spray before I put them back on a Stand. The spray ends up in the Leadpipe/Crook.
Anything bad about that in Long Term?

I never gave it any thought but now I am thinking about lots of things that I never gave any thought to :)

Re: Sanitizing Spray and Leadpipes?

All I can think of is the prospect of "sanitizer resistant bacteria" causing problems in the middle register (also known as staff infection).

When the meteor hits the earth and blows everyone and everything to kingdom come, it'll be because you used too much sanitizing spray.

You should be just fine if you blow the excess moisture out of the instruments and wipe them down before you place them into their cases. You should be doing this anyway.

Besides you'll be saving the earth from a horrifying end.

Re: Sanitizing Spray and Leadpipes?

I can't imagine a "shot" (short of soaking) of spray doing much of anything (including sanitizing). Bacteria is pretty tough and if there is anything substantial in the leadpipe, the bacteria will come back after the sanitizing alcohol has evaporated.

The only way to keep the horn clean, is to well - keep the horn clean = brush and soapy water.

On a laquered trumpet, the spray could cause a softening or discoloration of the laquer (around the spit key for instance). As long as there is no sulfur in the spray, silver is OK. Brass really doesn't care much.

Repeated exposure of the lips to the spray could cause allergies, or some other reaction of the lip tissue. Or manifestation of a spray resistant bacteria on your lips or oral cavity.

A little dirt is always good to keep our immune reaction system powerful! I think that when I kiss my washed and sanitized wife, more bacteria changes owners than with any of my unsanitized trumpets.

Re: Sanitizing Spray and Leadpipes?

I fear I am not scrupulous when it comes to cleaning my horn.

Sort of clean enough to be healthy, dirty enough to be happy.
