| New Friend | Schilke 14A4a or Bach 3E I've been playing on the Schilke 14A4a for years, and its great for jazz, but I've been encouraged by some fellow trumpet players (none very experienced) to switch to a Bach 3C to help my tone a little. First question: What would the Schilke be equivalent to, in terms of 5C, 3C, etc? Second question: My old high school band director played on a Bach 3E at a jazz clinic last year, and fell in love with it. He wants me to get one. How does the 3E compare to the Schilke 14A4a? What do you guys think? Stick with the Schilke? Try a 3C? 3E? Something else?

Regardless of what your friends told you ... do you agree with them that your tone could use some help? Also, do you think your old band director gave you a valid reason for considering the 3E (which seems to be contradictory to the advice your friends gave you)? It think a Bach 3C is close to a Schilke 15B, while a Bach 5C is close to a 14C. I like my Bach 3C a lot. But if you really like your Schilke 14A4a, and want a more general-purpose cup, maybe you should a consider a Schilke 14B or 14C? I sometimes use a Bach 3D and 3E for piccolo trumpet or for lead playing on the trumpet when I want a brighter sound. But for me personally, I don't like them for general playing. | |

![]() | Re: Schilke 14A4a or Bach 3E In my oppinion, the GR66MS sucks! The 66M is a nice piece though The Bach 3E is very shallow! I tends to bottom out quick on the 3E. If you are satisfied with the 14A4a and want a deeper piece, try Schilke/Yamaha 14B4 or maybe the Schilke 15. You will probably have the same range on all of them, but the sound will change! Just because your band director fell in love with the 3E, doesen't mean that you should buy it!

![]() | Re: Schilke 14A4a or Bach 3E I personally tried a 15B and a 14B. Despite what the Kanstul mouthpiece comparator says, the 14B felt much closer to a 3C than the 15B. The 15B felt much bigger. The 14B4 is the closest Yamaha equivalent to a 3C. I've been a longtime user of a 3C. Great mouthpiece, but I just switched to a Yamaha 14B4 and, after a short adjustment period, I really like it. Is it really better than the 3C? I doubt it. It probably just feels better to me because it is brand new and therefore smoother than my dinged-up 3C. Keep in mind that the Schilke 14B will have a rounder rim than your 14A4a, whereas the 3C and the Yamaha 14B4 rims are similar (semi-flat) to the 14A4a.

![]() | Re: Schilke 14A4a or Bach 3E I have 3C and a 15A4a and its pretty close to a 14A4a I think. I use the 15A4a for everything, and it seems to work great. Nothing wrong with the tone. Unless the problem is the brightness of the tone, I don't think a 3C will help much. |
