Schilke Mouthpiece - "airy" tone

I'm trying out a Schilke 14B and a Yamaha 14C4. The Schilke is very comfortable and I like the tone at normal and high volumes. However, at very soft volumes, my tone is "airy." Air is not leaking around my lips. I don't have this problem with the 14C4 or a Bach 3C. I'm kind of bummed because I really like everything else about the Schilke and I've read such great things about them. Any thoughts?

Personally, I thought the 14B was just... weird.

Try a straight 14 and see how that works for you, if you can.

Happens on most schilke's If you play quietly with a mute it might help you. That only happens if you are playing PP. Use something else on songs that have lots of PP or P parts.

A - It takes awhile to get used to a mouthpiece. Play it for awhile and it'll probably get end up sounding normal.

or...

B - If the others work better overall, they might be a better match for you.

Ive been playing on a schilke for about 2 years or so. The airy tone is from the way schilke makes their MP's

Perhaps it is from the way You Play the Schilke mouthpiece, not because of how they make mouthpieces.

Re: Schilke Mouthpiece - "airy" tone

I used to have lots of those airy leaks. Now I have barely any unless I am playing real soft for long periods of time. On different mp's you can play soft and have no airy leaks. I think schilke are really nice mouthpieces. They don't make your lips swell as much.

Re: Schilke Mouthpiece - "airy" tone

Never experienced the airy sound issue with a Schilke!!! Super hard edged raspy laser like thing on an A4a, full sound on 20, 20D2d, fairly normal on others.

Interesting.... airy???? Not sure how that works.

They do have a softer bite than a Bach.

Re: Schilke Mouthpiece - "airy" tone

I know . . . it's strange. It's only at very soft volumes, like when I try to do soft long tone exercises (which I do a lot so it's kind of annoying). And I don't mean just a little airy. The difference between the Schilke vs the Yamaha and Bach in this respect is shocking. But the Schilke is so great in all other aspects that I hate to just give up on it and send it back.

Is the mp fits well in the mp receiver?
