Re: schilkemp11d4

11 is a medium rim, smaller than a 3C. D is a very DEEP cup, 4 is a semi flat rim (not wider than a 3c). Because there are no other designators, it has a standard backbore and throat.
Big sound, you will need to practice to keep a sparkle in the high range.

A Schilke to give a similar experience to a 3C would be more like a 14B. Forget the measurements, the Schilke feels and sounds much different. Smoother, less hard than a 3C.

Feels smoother or sounds smoother? Just curious as I'm about to try a 14B as an alternative to my 3C.

yup, smoother sound. The 3C has a certain amount of edge throughout the range. The Schilke sounds more elegant to me. The semi flat rim is something you love or hate. I love it.

The 14B is also a great lead mouthpiece for players used to the 14A4A but needing a bit more room when the chops swell.

I don't. Which actually confirms the above.

Rowuk, sorry for my confusion. If we're talking about a 14B, we're talking about a standard "3" rim, not a semi-flat "4" rim, correct? What do you think about the standard Schilke rim vs the semi-flat? I realize that it is up to my own tastes in the end, but I am interested in your opinion.

Re: schilkemp11d4

I would just call schilke if I were you Ric, the feedback from their salesmanager is pretty fair and decent compared to that of which I have recieved from other companies. I am not sure that Rowuk would know a hec-of-a-lot about schilke rims. If i recall, he uses a monette piece, but thats all up to my unreliable memory.

Do you know about the kanstul mouthpiece comparator?
