![]() | What are your thoughts on shallow mouthpieces? I first had a 7c then a 5c from a trumpet I got. I recently got a 3e. I have a habbit of playing mainly upper lip because my teeth, but it is also just a bad habbit I got into. I realized the way to play a shallow mouthpice is mainly lower lip and I have been having a little trouble getting used to it. I know that it is really just personal preference, but what do you think of this situation? Should I try to break the habbit and use the 5c or 7c or use the 3e? |

![]() | Re: Shallow Mouthpiece I use a verry shallow MP and I use 1/3 lip on top and 2/3 lip on bottom (not sure how to say that correctly lol) I say keep the 3E and try to adjust to it.

Why would you advise him to use it??????? What is your reasoning for that statement?

![]() ![]() | Re: Shallow Mouthpiece If your having trouble with the depth of the 3E ,you could try flatting the playing surface ,by pushing your lower jaw against the mouthpiece , or maybe a slightly deeper cup like a 3D might give you a little more lip room. I play about 3//4 to 4/5 top lip and play a Warburton 6SV anchor top and never bottom out . |

![]() | Re: Shallow Mouthpiece I would suggest finding a qualified teacher who can look and carefully evaluate your playing. Thats the best advice I can think of, because we all can't see your playing but can only offer guesses as to which is "best" for you. |

| Forte User | Re: Shallow Mouthpiece Only Monette to my knowledge makes pitch specific mouthpieces - the difference is mostly in the shank length, but I will leave that to more knowleadgable than me Monette users.. However, the Bach 3E is usually supplied with 117 backbore which makes of it more of a picc mouthpiece.

All of the brand and size advice without physically seeing you play are essentially worthless. One decent lesson can get you a real answer. Find somebody good locally. "Standard" mouthpieces like 7Cs are called that because they strike a balance between extremes, not too big or small, not too deep or shallow, balanced endurance and flexibility. I generally recommend starting standard and then once everything is working well, figuring out where ones playing should go in the next 2 years. What type of music, what position, etc. With that info, an intelligent decision can be made to stick with what you have, or move on to something more extreme - with all of the good and bad that extreme brings.
