![]() | I'm hoping someone can help me correct a finish problem on my vintage King Silver Flair. As you may know these horns don't have a third valve slide lock and the slide has a tendancy to extend further than I'm comfortable with when carrying the case on end. I decided to loop a rubber band around the finger ring to the first valve to keep it snug, and less than 24 hours later I had what can best be descibed as "grill marks" on the valve casing and slide! I've tried polishing cloths, silver polish, and even Tarnex to no avail. These things don't want to come off! Does anyone have any suggestions???? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Silver Plate Tarnish Rubber bands can be nasty that way! To remove all tarnish, soak the horn in boiling water with some aluminum foil and salt. The tarnish will attach itself to the foil, but you'll lose all the patina. Dang. Have fun!

![]() | Re: Silver Plate Tarnish Hmm, I have a kind of stretchy string (like you see on monettes) that I loop around the finger rings on my Bb and it seems to work well, I haven't had any problems, so maybe find some and it will probably work better than a rubber band (get white, it isn't visible on silver from a distance)

![]() ![]() | Re: Silver Plate Tarnish Just remember that rubber bands and silver plated instruments aren't good together. Some people don't know until the after effects of rubber touching silver plate occurs. Follow the advice given and hopefully the matter will be resolved. Best wishes, Lloyd |

![]() ![]() | Re: Silver Plate Tarnish Rubber bands contain sulfur. Sulfur and silver combine to make tarnish. We went through this recently so here we go again. Wrap your silver in aluminum foil. Not too tight and use a lot of aluminum foil. A large Surface area of the aluminum is good. Dissolve some sodium carbonate, also known as Arm and Hammer All Natural Super Washing Soda, in hot tap water. Available at the clothes washing soap area of your grocery store. Put the aluminum foil wrapped part in the solution and let it set until the water is cool. I let it go for 3 or more hours. Unwrap it and the silver should be clean. Use a new piece of aluminum foil to burnish away any tarnish remaining. Hold the part in the solution while burnishing. Rinse the part well under warm tap water. Dry completely and polish with a silver polishing cloth available at your local music store.

![]() | Re: Silver Plate Tarnish Go on over to Wal-Mart and grab some Wright's Silver Cream from the dish soap aisle. People use it for cleaning expensive silverware and most DCI corps at least used to use it to clean their horns. Basically get your trumpet wet and smear the stuff on, then rinse off! |

Hi, Silver Flair, Not to worry about it. We use rubber bands for nearly every "bundling" purpose including booklets and stuff. It is easy not to know the damage that rubber bands cause silver plated instruments. Sometimes, we forget that fact when we throw something in the horn case surrounded by a rubber band. Hope your project to remove the tarnish will be successful. Best wishes, LLoyd | |
