The 14A4a will do fine for high notes! Maybe the Shew will work fine as well! The Shew is very small, and I personally find it hard to use it for other than lead playing!

In the beginning, a smaller shallow piece will work great in the upper register, but after a while, you will end up with the same struggle as for the deeper ones! The sound will usually change when using a shallower piece, more lazer beam tone!

Personally, I use a Schilke 11A for all playing! Almost like a 7C size, but completly different feel! I play mostly lead! Try whatever you can try....no one can tell you what to buy!! Good luck...

No mouthpiece will give you high range. Only sensible practice accomplishes that. The mouthpiece helps determine the sound. A different sound is needed for a lead trumpet player than one in a band or symphony orchestra. We buy trumpets and mouthpieces for the job at hand. We practice to fill the shoes of the job.

Mouthpiece and range do not belong in the same sentence. Just like tires do not make a car fast, mouthpieces do not make high notes.

Re: Some help to choose mouthpiece.

I'm not sure a particular mouthpiece will help your range.
Consistent, sensible practice and proper use of air will. That said, you won't be able to practice consistently if the mouthpiece doesn't feel comfortable on your chops. For me that is the most crucial element. A lot of that will have to do with your own physiology (teeth, jaw structure, thin vs thick lips etc) so It's all very personal.
Comfort aside...a few things to consider and again, this is all subjective and individual.
The two basic schools of thought are play the smallest mouthpiece you can get a good sound on or play the biggest mouthpiece you can maintain range and endurance on.
Again....subjective. I know guys that play on very small mpieces that have huge sounds and guys that play on huge mpieces that can play in the upper register all night and never get tired.
In both cases their fundamental trumpet playing mechanics were together and thats why they were getting the results.
I would say comfort and a mpiece that gets you, at least close to, the sound you hear in your head is a good place to start.
A shallower mouthpiece might be easier at first and sound brighter but if your chops/air aren't working in harmony after a few weeks (or less) you'll be in the same place.

Hope this helps!
Peace-
B

Re: Some help to choose mouthpiece.

First consider staying with what you already have. It takes as much time to get used to the new piece as it does to get more comfortable higher up in range. And of course, you still will have to build that range. Plus you save a few bucks in the process.

Shew has such a beautiful tone though. The guy can scream, but he still sounds good.
