| Stork “Pumped Up” Afternoon, I normally use a Stork 1.5C mouthpiece. I was thinking of ordering a ‘B’ cup piece for use with my newly-acquired C trumpet as a little experiment. I went to the Stork website this morning and noticed that one now has the option of ordering his or her mouthpiece “pumped up.” Has anyone tried one of these? Any impressions? I read the description on their page, just wondering if anyone has tried one in person. Andy |

| Re: Stork “Pumped Up” For reference, here's what the Stork site says: Most cups look like this: Very "C" shaped with flat bottoms and small "throats" (entrance to the bore.) Our standard Vacchiano cups look more like this: More of a gradual "V" shape. I have not tried "these particular" mpcs...but have tried V cups in the past. As always...it will all depend on how "you" react to this type of cup shape. If you have some lip intrusion to the cup, then a V cup shape may feel a bit shallower to you, because your lips will begin to touch the inside of the cup sooner at the side. Therefore, you may benefit from a slightly larger cup mass to offset this. Conversly, if you have little lip intrusion, this type of cup may provide good volume and focus to your sound. May, may, may...could, could, could.. it's all about you. I see where you live, Andy...maybe you could "hobo" your way up to the Stork shop and try them out! Ha! Another option as a test...see if a local shop or any of your friends have any V cup mpcs they'd be willing to let you blow into. That will at least give you an idea on whether that shape is helpful to you. Best of luck! Last edited by wilcox96 : 06-04-2007 at 03:10 PM. |

Due to the shape, there is not as much "turbulence" in the cup which means that the lips are not supported as much by the air cushion as in the "bowl" shaped cup. I think this is a shape for a very strong embouchure. |

| Re: Stork “Pumped Up” I have tried many Stork mouthpieces, both regular B,C and D cups and also their coresponding "pump up" versions. The pumping process openes up the V-shape into more of a C-shape (or U-shape). It tends to darken the sound, according to Phyllis Stork, by slowing down the air. I don't know why the sound darkens, but in fact, it does. Overall I feel it adds volume to the cup. I've always liked Stork mouthpieces, but they never seemed right for me in an orchestra, but they are fun to play. I'm basically married to my Parke-Merkelo piece. |

On second thought, I'll probably just call Stork and tell them to "pump up" a 1.5B and see what happens. I'm itching for a rental car adventure, but with the price of gas, even that amount of fun isn't worth it. Maybe I'll post my impressions of the "pumped" piece when I get it. | |

![]() ![]() | Re: Stork “Pumped Up” Why don't you look into different throat sizes and backbores before you go "pumping things up" You mentioned something about the C trumpet. You might find that a larger throat and backbore combo works a whole lot better on a c trumpet. Try the same mp with different throat bbore combos IMHO |

![]() | Re: Stork “Pumped Up” Andy, I have a Bach 5SV I'll be glad to send you. It gave me fuzzy, airy tone I could not get rid of. PM me with your address and I'll put it in a blister package. If you like it, send me some frozen Walleye. (Just kidding. I'll send it for nothing.) Jim I just noticed that your original post is very old. Let me know if you are interested. I should have checked the date. |
