Tarnish/soil removal, silver vintage

I have a Martin Handcraft Dansant trumpet, 1929. I JUST got it (as in I picked it up this morning). It's tarnished/soiled (see pictures). I plan on sending it in to the repair shop for a chem bath and other repairs, although it's in pretty good condition.

For the meantime, though, is there a way to remove tarnish without damaging the horn itself? I used a soft scrub and mild soap, which removed a little of it. But is there a product for this purpose?

Thanks so much!

Ditto Tarni-Shield. Find it in most department stores and possibly even grocery stores in the Housewares and Cleaners section. You can also go to the 3M website, browse through their products and contact a customer service rep by email and they can tell you where to find it in your area.

Wal Mart carries Wright's Silver Cream. People use it for expensive silverware, and it removes just about any tarnish on silver.

Or use the foil/soda soak:

Hi, ABC Girl,

With the products mentioned, the horn will look so much nicer. It may surprise you! It appears to be a horn that will clean up very nicely.

Hagerty's Silver Polish works, too! I use the spray can with a soft cloth for removing tarnish with and cotton swabs for the smaller places. I use another soft cloth to wipe it down well after. Maybe you can show us pictures of what your trumpet looks like after the tarnished is removed.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Re: Tarnish/soil removal, silver vintage

I've been told tarnishield is a great way to lock in that tarnish almost permanently. That it's great for polishing a shiny horn and, uh, shielding it from tarnish. Apparently there is a product meant to go with it for tarnish *removal*... Tarnex. I've never used either, just relaying what I've been told.

Apparently that Tarnex is heavy-duty... will eventually take silver plate off but good for that one-time scrub. I'd try the baking soda trick first though.
