Tarnished Mouthpieces

I have a box full of mouthpieces that I have been aquiring/collecting over the last 15-20 years. I am doing some spring cleaning. I would like to clean them all up and make them availible for purchase in the classified section.

I have a lot of interesting mouthpieces, Bach (old, new, Mt. Vernon), Shilke, Reeves, Stork, Warburton, Giardenelli, Curry, etc.

Any ideas what the best, easiest, way to accomplish this task.

thanks,

JS

Tarnishield. Wipe it on, let it dry to haze, wipe it off.

Make a paste out of 2/3rds baking soda, 1/3 non-gritty, but non-gel tooth paste with a bit of water. Take an old tooth brush and scrub the mpcs with that paste. Use a mpc brush, of course, for the inside. Set mpcs aside on a towel to dry... then rinse off paste.

Works like a charm.

Justin,
try this first - no work, no scratches!

"Another little tidbit. Placing tarnished silver on aluminum foil in a bicarb solution creates another redox reaction which reduces the oxidized (tarnished) silver back to silver metal onto the surface and evolves CO2 gas while moving the sulfur (which oxidized hte silver in the first place) to the now oxidized aluminum. Good way to polish a trumpet/mouthpiece etc without worrying about removing silver."
I have been doing this for years and it really works!

Repair shops have a pink fluid which will clean off all the tarnish. All you do is rinse the silver plated items in it. Supermarkets have a similar product "Tarnx".

Be prepared for the sulphur smell!

Re: Tarnished Mouthpieces

You could send them to me .I own a small plating shop. I could clean them all a lot faster than you can and if any of them need replating I could do that also.
