Re: Is their such thing as a solid gold mouthpiece?

If you want a mouthpiece in solid gold and have the money for one, SOMEONE would make it for you.

Mouthpieces are generally made from brass and then plated in silver and gold for those who choose gold.

Others make them in steel, plastic and wood.

Alex Yates has a mouthpiece made from mastodon ivory.

I'm sure that if you didn't mind the seam, someone could pour a solid gold mouthpiece for less than the cost of cutting one. I wonder what the tonal properties would be like.

I tried once a Conn trumpet with a big percent of sliver in it and it sound quite awfull...dull may be the right word. I don't think that solid gold is a good idea for a mouthpiece. Gold plated MP are one thing but solid gold..does not sound very promising to me

I am more curious as to how someone would obtain a chunk of mastodon tusk or bone for such a purpose? ("unobtanium"?)
