is there really a difference?

concerning valve oils and slide greases. i've been playing for fifteen years now, and after seeing some of the "have you tried this oil" threads my interest is piquing.

is there a difference between different valve oils and slide greases? is it a major difference? personally i buy the first (and usually cheapest) oil i see. i honestly think i can say that each of my horns has a different brand of oil and grease in their respective cases. i oil my valves every other time i practice with a horn so they never really dry out. in fact the only name brand oil i know i have is holton's. or is it selmers?

Re: is there really a difference?

The different oils have different properties. Some are lighter, some heavier. The different thicknesses are used for different purposes.
I have been told that the new Yamaha Oil is specially formulated to evaporate evenly, so one part of the oil molecule doesn't disappear earlier than another. I bought a bottle and it works nicely, but I don't know if it better than the Hetman's that I use these days.

Sometimes if your spit is too acidic the valve oil can mix with it and cause drag so I am told.

Re: is there really a difference?

I have been playing for almost 50 years, 40 as a professional.

I used Al Cass for most of that time.

When my Courtois 708 Sonic was wearing out I switched to Zaja oils. I did not use the blue, I used the scented oils. I find it works very well with older horns that might have sticky or slow valve.

A few years ago when I bought my first Schilke, I was introduced to Ultra-Pure oils.

I used them on my Schilkes, and Lawler.

I use Ultra-Pure on my Eclipse horns and could not be happier.

I my opinion Ultra-Pure makes the best oil I have used.

The slide grease and light slide grease is also my only choice.

I think there IS a difference.

I found ZaJa Scented oils very good with older or worn horns.

The scent is a little more than just subtle.

I liked the orange, but I REALLY liked the vanilla scented oil.

More than a few people I know have said that the scented oils really helped their older horns.

I still go with Ultra-Pure on my new horns though.

i wanna give the zaja oils a try, but it seems as though they're only available online; my local sam ash and any other music stores carry off brand oils.

Re: is there really a difference?

In my limited experience, I have tried a Woodwind and Brasswind brand that came with my Barrington. This sort of gives me a "netural baseline" to work from because it is nothing special, just oil. Next I went to Al Cass and I found that to be better but still seemed to be lacking something especially after I got the older Holton horns. Now I use Hetman's on everything and am very happy with it. I use lighter on the Barrington and a heavier on the older horns and everything works very well for me. Those old valves on the Supers seem to work like greased lightening!!

Re: is there really a difference?

I've never expermented with valve oils, I just use the generic brand that the music store sells to schools for the music programs. $1.99 for a bottle, works well for me. Works well in the King, use it on all my old Olds with out problem.

If it aint broke.........

Re: is there really a difference?

I use either Bach or Al Cass oils on my newer tighter valves and Slick Stuff on the more worn horns.

Re: is there really a difference?

what about more conventional oils, such as 3 n 1 or wd40; are they detrimental to a horn?
