Cool time for a new mouthpiece

Hey everyone.
I've been playing trumpet for 4 years now, and i've been using the same mouthpiece, which im sure is still for beginners.
I have a yamaha 11c4-7c as of now.
Can anyone recommend something that is better for range?

Im not worried about tone and I have the highest range in my class, but the more the merrier.

Yea, I had the equivalent to that in a Bach, which is a 7c. I changed to a 5c quickly after I started. But don't ignore your tone, and bigger mouthpiece will get you both, a better tone and a better range. but don't rush your range, work up to it. So I suggest a Bach 5c, or the Yamaha equivalent, which ever you're more comfortable with. If that doesn't work, a 3c definently will.

Dan,

You prob know this already, but I thought I might run it by you. There's more pros than either of us will ever know who bring down the house with "beginner" mouthpieces such as a Bach 7, Schilke or Yamaha 11 etc.

Good Hunting,

Richard

Re: time for a new mouthpiece

I would work up the courage and money to buy a 1.5 c bach mouthpiece. You will hear the difference. It will help get that fat lead trumpet sound that everyone wants.

Re: time for a new mouthpiece

The bach 1.5c you say. It sounds like it's good but a few questions...

1)What kind of courage we talkin about here? Like learning to use it?
2)How much money?
3) Is it a good idea(safe) to go from 7c all the way up to 1.5c in one jump?

[Can anyone recommend something that is better for range?]
Yes practice. As for a bigger mouthpiece what is wrong with what you have? and you can get a nice sound out of a Bach 10 1/2 c, you need to practice soft tones at pp than ppp than pppp. it works!

Re: time for a new mouthpiece

Are you taking lessons? If so, what does your teacher recommend? Why do you think you need a new one anyway? Be aware that there is an ENORMOUS difference between a 10-1/2 and a 1-1/2. Go somewhere that has a bunch and try them out; pick the one that you like best AND GET RID OF YOUR OLD ONE. It will take from 2 weeks to 2 months to get really used to a new one. 4 years isn't that long. There is no such thing as a "beginner" mouthpiece; they are all brass (well, mostly!) and silver or gold plated (again, mostly). There is also no such thing as a "pro" mouthpiece.

Al Vizzutti plays on a 7-1/2 equivalent; nobody ever complained about HIS sound or range.

Of course practise, I practise alot and as a result, I got (what I think) is a pretty good range.

All i know is I want a mouthpiece to help tone and range, although I don't have much to complain my current mouthpiece.

What can I say, I like change.
