Upper Register

I'm trying to reach upper registers but I feel that I am putting to much pressure on my mouthpiece. What do I need to know about reaching upper registers? Please give me things I need to know so I can do further research on the internet/books.

Re: Upper Register

1. Get a private teacher to work one on one with you.
2. Read materail on how your body works outside of the musical feild.
3. Make sure your fundamentals are in order to obtain higher registers.
4. SEARCH THE 40 MILLION PREVIOUS POSTS ON "How can I play higher?"!!
5. Remember that 90% of work in the real world is High C and below.

Don't get me wrong. I love to play lead, especially if I have a good section to work with. But all this range stuff is getting to me.... grrrr.. Big Bear getting mad.

Re: Upper Register

It's amazing, but the more relaxed you are with regards to air and body tension, the easier the high notes come out. For me the trick is to keep the body relaxed even when I start to get tired or lack stamina. That's when the practice, practice, practice fundamentals comes into play.

Re: Upper Register

Try practicing long-tones very soft, same for lip-slurs, rest as long as you play , try extending you range every day, never practice when your lips are tired, use air pressure not arm pressure, practice arpeggios to your top note then try the next 1/2 step ,alternate between slurring and tonguing each day, don't over do it, some day's you have it some day's you don't, Clarke technical studies played soft are very good, don' forget to rest, I'd say about 5 min. on 5 min. off.

Re: Upper Register

Listen to Doc Severinsen, Maynard Ferguson and Bill Chase loud. Try to sound like them without sacrificing your lower register, then ask more questions.

Have fun!

Re: Upper Register

Ive noticed a lot of interesting points on posture while watching videos of lead trumpet players or upper register soloists play. Take a look at that. The head should be pretty straight with the body and not at all jointed foward (That i see looking at MF, Bill Chase, Arturo Sandoval, Seneca Black) They appear as though their mouthpieces are jammed into their head but their head is just back. Not sure if this will help but if I could get someone to verify this that would be pleasant

Hi David,
Read Arch Tongue and Hiss and give serious thought to what VB said about listening.

Re: Upper Register

Darn!

I went to the classified and
thought I saw someone
selling upper registers.

Obviously I was wrong....

Then I realized that upper register
has to be earned, not bought

Razors on the mouthpiece will help reduce pressure....

**It is not advisable to use this approach... HA.

BEAR! How can you recommend something like that? They have no high notes now and you want them to learn to play sharp! Shame on you!
