Valve Gards

I am wondering if any of you use valve guards and if so what type you would recommend. I am looking for one because my trumpet always
gets sweaty when I play.

I use Dolly Bags' valve guard. The outside covering is made of leather and the texture feels great and the inside is of a waterproof lining which prevent the sweat from getting on the trumpet. It also protects the bell and parts of the first and third slide where your hand touches.

They usually have some up on eBay but not at the moment. You can contact their salesman Steve Wiseman at stevetwiseman@msn.com to get a hold of one and it's only around ten dollars.

Valve Gards

Leather Specialties..... www.leatherspecialtiesco.com . They're on ALL of my horns and I can't stand the feel of a horn without the leather guard on it!....and....NO....IMO, having a guard on your horn DOES NOT change the sound of the horn!

Do you use the special type or the basic type?

All horns have the "Special Hand Guard - 3rd Slide"...in other words the one with the maximum coverage.

Ditto on the Leather Specialties guards. They are way good. Have been using them since 1990. Had them on all my horns...even the Schilke picc...which I didn't like (the guard I mean). Just felt too weird. Everything else was wicked awesome.

Robert Rowe is on a distinguished road
The last time I used one was a long time ago, and it chafed some of the lacquer off of the valve cluster. I don't have "sweaty hands" (just armpits), but I would consider using again if they don't harm the horn. It might be a moot point, as I removed the lacquer from my "Main Squeeze", anyhow. I'm a "raw-brass" kind-of-guy....
