Valve guard covers -string, velcro, larger?

efore randomly ordering, does anyone have any suggestions on the best valve guard to get? I see Dolly Dolly bags makes one that extends up over the lead pipe for protection agains the right hand, and also seems to help cover some on the 3rd valve slide. Anyone have one? Does it interfer with playing?

Also, is there a preference of string tie to velcro? The ones I used 30 years ago had a snap and worked well, though I'd like a little more coverage than they provided, if it doesn't interfer with playing.

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Valve guard covers -string, velcro, larger?

I have a Yamaha velcro guard for my Xeno. It's pretty good except that it's a little bulky right where my right thumb goes under the mouthpipe. No big deal, though. For my old horn, I have an old Bach lace-up valve guard (It's gold in color so it matches my horn. A nice tacky early 80's sort of thing.) The Bach is much thinner because it is completely synthetic unlike the new Yamaha model which I think is leather. I personally don't like the guards that cover more than just the valve guard. If there is one that covers the valve guard and the bell area where your left hand rests, I think that would be fine. But I don't like the ones that offer "extra protection" on the right side at the mouthpipe. Seems like it would be in the way all the time.

Leather Specialities CRE Loaded 6 - Leather Specialties Company

is pretty much the top quality producer of these guards. I have seven guards for my horns and Larry Black (owner) has made custom guards with larger flaps for under the bell and leadpipe with stiffener material to protect the instruments with velcro fasteners with a celophane liner to prevent hand acids from going through the cover to the finish. No wear or ravages from handling. Great investment to protect your instument/s for little expense. Well worth the cost in my opinion.

Wow, thanks Tom. Looks like they would do the job. Any problems on interfering with handling? Only glitch I see is they are over double what other guards list for. Oh well.

I have used neoprene w/velcro on my trumpets for years with good results, comfortable and no damage to horn. Got mine at Discount Dave's Tampa store.

Those guards seems a little excessive for me.
I use a guard from ProTec that only covers the casing.
I use a cloth to wipe off the oils not protected from the guard.
Those guards seem like they will effect your performance?
How do they work for you?

Re: Valve guard covers -string, velcro, larger?

I'd recommend that you get a velco valve guard. Once a week (or every few weeks), you should remove it clean off any gunk or moisture that may get trapped underneath. That will help prevent any damage to the finish, be it plated or lacquer.

The lace ones are nice, but it's a pain to remove.

Re: Valve guard covers -string, velcro, larger?

My Neoprene one does the job for me. On my old horn (before I got the guard) all the lacquer on the valve casing came off (I have quite acidic skin) and a bit wore where the lower part of my left hand index finger rubbed against the bell stem. With my new horn (and guard) the finish on the casing is fine, and the wearing on the bell stem seems to be a lot less severe than it did on my old horn. Probably because my old horn was not the highest quality horn out there...
I will say that the Guard was a very good purchse.

The leather ones all seem quite fancy, and if you can afford to pay a little more, go ahead- They'll probably last longer too.

I like the feel of the vibrating horn in my hands. Insulation removes me from that experience. That is why I do not use them.
