Yep. You don't want to injest kerosene and/or lamp oil. Ditto with the synthetic products derived from the petrochemical industry also.

Valve oil is made for one purpose and it does a good job doing that purpose. However, it can be harmful if swallowed.

Re: Valve Oil (s)

Merlin,
Petroleum based valve oil vapors are only toxic if you inhale them directly. When playing your horn, you have nothing to worry about - even playing 8 hours a day.
Synthetic lubricants do not evaporate as quickly as petroleum based ones, so in normal use, they have even less potential effects.

Re: Valve Oil (s)

Ultra-Pure Professional Valve Oil is quite non-toxic and is also non-carcinogenic. Our MSDS is posted on our website. Health & Safety

The only risk that Ultra-Pure Oil has that is shared with all light oils is that you don't want to drink a lot of it and then vomit. Reaspirating oil when vomiting carries the risk of getting the liquid oil deep into your lungs which, of course, is a bad thing. Children under 5 years of age are considered most at risk (due to the number of deaths due to drinking "baby oil"). We do sell Ultra-Pure Oil in a mist-spray bottle, which is considered child-resistant according to US regulations.

Ultra-Pure is also non-flammable, so can be carried on airlines with your other liquids.

You left out...that your valves might work better than they ever have :)
Works wonders on a Yamaha of mine that is really finnicky with Oils.

You know, I bought a couple of bottles of Zaja blue oil because I once read that petroleum valve oil is better on your horn than synthetics. I noticed that Zaja makes no such claim on their website, however your company actually says that your synthetic oil can resist corrosion.

Do you have a link to some info that will help clarify this for me/us?

I'm looking for good quality oil that will be gentle on both me AND my horns.

Thanks!

Re: Valve Oil (s)

One of the problems with petroleum based oils, like kerosene, is the abilty to repel water - if this happens then there is a possibilty that the interface between the 'oil' and the water can harbour micro-organisms. Not so bad you say, except that that these organisms 'poop' a corrosive substance that seems to like soft metals (particularly aluminium / copper and the various alloys). This appears to be not such a drama with synthetically based oils - but heaven knows what other 'foibles' synthetic oils conceal.

Bottom line - keep your instrument clean, re-oil your valves regularly, breathe out - not in through the trumpet (that way you won't suck when playing - heh! heh!), live a long and happy life.

Re: Valve Oil (s)

I hope upoils doesn't mind if I split a few hairs:

He mentions that Ultra-pure oil is nonflammable. This is true in regards to
DOT and EPA regulations in that it doesn't have a flash point below 200 degrees F. Saying something is nonflammable does not mean it won't burn, take paper or most plastics, for example.

I'm also not saying it's dangerous or harmful by any means. I'm just saying it's a petroleum based product and it's possible that it can burn.

(I hope this doesn't get me on Ultra-Pure's "Banned Customer" list

Re: Valve Oil (s)

The least wear on any valves and trumpets was with my Monette Ajna2 where I used LaTromba T2 synthetic exclusively. Even after 10 years the valves were very tight, passing Dave Monettes "pop" test.
My Bach 72* Bb and 229H C got the valves overhauled every 5-6 years - I used Al Cass and oiled almost daily! The wear was considerable. Al Cass left deposits on the horns not regularly used and after a month or two, the valves would stick. This does not happen with sythetic
I feel that synthetic oil does a better job than any petroleum based product. You still need to swab out the casing before reoiling and clean the horn regularly.
UltraPure came with my Monette and works very well as long as I am constantly playing the horn. It does not like to be left in the case for a couple of days (which happens when I have concerts with the nat).
