| Forte User | Re: Wedge vs Prana Monette mouthpieces I played a Monette mouthpiece for about 6 months. The size I chose was too large for me, and I sold it. It played wonderfully. I have played Wedge mouthpieces for 1.5 years now and I love them. I have one for my Trumpet, Cornet and Flugel. I found that they still help me produce a nice round sound just like the Monette, but allow me to keep that sound even when fatigued. I can't see changing from the Wedge any time in the future unless something miraculous comes around because for me, the Wedge satisfies all of my needs. And they have a trial, so if you don't like it, just send it back for your money back. Can't go wrong there.

Things that are supposed to be, just fit. The only way you can figure this out is to try them. I have been playing Monette for 12 out of 43 years (I am almost 53 now).

![]() | Re: Wedge vs Prana Monette mouthpieces Agreed- you need to try a lot of mouthpieces to get a good fit. I went through a friends collection of mouthpieces a couple times on my hunt for a good one. About a 1.5 years ago I switched to a Wedge - it works well for me.

![]() | Re: Wedge vs Prana Monette mouthpieces The Wedge is very comfortable and flexible with many, interchangeable options. I was introduced to them at the 2009 ITG. They received great feedback from many players who tried them. Dr. Dave is very knowledgeable about the fitting too. |

![]() | Re: Wedge vs Prana Monette mouthpieces Hi Remi, I cannot comment on any "bad" side of Monette mouthpieces. I think they are an excellent product. I played them myself for a few years. The Wedge mouthpiece is not for everyone. About 5% of players find the rim uncomfortable (about 100% of players think it looks strange and beleive it will be uncomfortable - so most are pleasantly surprised). Sometimes discomfort is due to sharp or crooked teeth in the central part of the embouchure. The Wedge design can concentrate pressure on these ares. On the other hand, some players with sharp or crooked teeth a bit off to the side report that the narrow shoulders of the Wedge rim allow them to position the mouthpiece so that it misses these sharp teeth that a conventional mouthpiece puts pressure on. If the Wedge is uncomfortable a change to a Gabriel rim will often fix the problem, but some players simply do not like the feeling of the rim. Those players are better off using a conventional mouthpiece. The other complaint I have heard in the past is that the mouthpiece sounds too "nice". Some lead players have commented that even the shallow models sound relatively dark and do not cut enough in the upper register. I suppose that is a good or bad thing depending on your perspective. It has not been a problem since we introduced stainless steel models, which can peel paint. The Wedge does require a bit of attention to mouthpiece placement, because it must be positioned in the correct orientation. Those players with a drawn back or "smiling" embouchure do not tend to do well with the Wedge. It requires a more forward focused embouchure to work well. How's that for a manufacturer pointing out the negative side of his own product? It is a good thing I do not make my living this way :) Cheers, Dave

![]() | Re: Wedge vs Prana Monette mouthpieces OH! THANKS Mr Harrison! I'm Very honored by your reply! It was exactely the kind of think that I want to read! And if the other "Dave" could do the same, it would be a great day... I need a great bright sound in upper registre (double high C). So is the wedge mouthpiece effect so dark??? Thanks. Rémi, a lucky man... |

![]() | Re: Wedge vs Prana Monette mouthpieces Hi Remi, The dark sound is a relative thing. We have many lead payers and endorsing artists who are very happy with the sound, and it is hard for a DHC to sound dark on any mouthpiece. I am sure that an appropriate Wedge lead mouthpiece, especially in stainless steel, would allow you to have all the brilliance and projection you need. I don't think the other "Dave" posts much :) Cheers, Dave
