weighted bottom valve caps and slide grease

so i'm a student player. ive been playing for 7 years and studying privately for 5. i play a strad and use a shilke 14 mouthpiece. i was recommended by a trumpet teacher at a band camp i attended to look into weighted bottom valve caps but i dont know what weight to get or what brand or pretty much anything about it. obviously, this is a problem. so if anyone could recommend anything for me, id greatly appreciate it. if you need anymore background information to help make the suggestion just ask

also i need to buy slide grease. ive always used the bach gel that you get in the care kits, but i find that it is less than satisfactory in its lubricating abilities. so i wanted to know a good brand name for spray grease so i can get some. thanks a lot!

Re: weighted bottom valve caps and slide grease

Get some dimes and put them in your valve caps, and experiment with putting them in
You may find the extra weight doesn't help, i found that a little extra weight in the 2nd and 3rd valve caps helped a lot

For slide grease, a lot of people recommend ultra-pure's

Re: weighted bottom valve caps and slide grease

I have found that after I grease my slides if I add a drop of valve/slide oil it greatly increases the sliptivity of the slide.

Pathorn,
for the slide grease, go to the drugstore and get some ANHYDROUS LANOLIN. It is fantastic and cheaper than anything commercial. On the first and third slides the drop of valveoil after greasing does the trick!

I don't like weighted bottom caps myself unless the horn was designed to have them!

Doesn't that stuff get sort of gunky and sticky after a while? For how many years a tube of slide grease can last, I always figured it's worth the cost. I agree with the drop of oil to slick it up.

Oldlou a few months back recommended a product call BAG BALM that contains lanoline among other ingredience.Great for slides as well as chapped lips. Its been on the market for around a century. You can find it at some drugstores or just look online. The 10 ounce tin will last forever for about 8 bucks.

We use lanolin at my shop for all the rental horns. I have just started putting it on my own horns. It works great!

Re: weighted bottom valve caps and slide grease

For first and third slide grease I use trombone slide grease.

As far as the heavy caps, I also believe that the trumpet should be made for the heavier caps.

I don't like the dime idea. The wholes in the bottom are there for a reason.

I also use Bag Balm after OLDLOU"s recommendation. Works great! It is carried at Walgreen's. I also use Bach heavy caps on my Barrington and I think they have beneficial effects.
