Hi!
Can any of you recomend any good MPs to get an airy and soft sound? I study jazz trumpet at university and play a Martin Committee and use a Bach 1 1/4 MP at the moment. I know that the mouthpiece is very important for the tone and I really love the airy and soft sound. Any MPs you can recomend?

Hi, Fred!

I woulodn't change a MP unless I am unconfortable with. Bach 1 1/4 does nots sound to me as a partuculary typical choice for jazz playing, but if it works fine for you it's OK. Myself I am orchestral player, performing rarely jazz pieces. Depends on what you want to look for in a MP. Are you clear on that? What is more important to you - big sound, high notes or something else. It seems to me that one can achieve aury sound with any MP, depending more on the way you play, than on the MP you use. What about the the horn you use?

I play a ML Martin Committee. Sure, I can get the airy sound with the piece I have right now, however some pieces makes it easier to achive a more stuffy and softer tone. I'm mainly playing jazz music in small ensembles so and I'm not very interested in playing high notes or lead stuff, just to get a soft, airy and preferebly big sound. I'm playing mainly in the mid register so don't worry about the high notes...

maybe try a curry TF mouthpiece, the rim is like your bach mp but the cup has some characteristics of a flugel horn piece. It may help you achieve the sound you are looking for easier.

Hi,
Just got a Laskey 81D. Love the sound I get with this piece! Do any of you have any experience of Laskey mpc?

Uh, as far as I know, no mouthpiece has been built for an airy sound, because that seduces viola players.

Check out Miles Davis' Ascenseur pour l'échafaud if you haven't already. Besides being one of the greatest hours of jazz ever put on record, Miles is getting the sound that you're after. His secret? He had chapped lips and a piece of his skin came off and stuck to the inside of the mouthpiece while he was recording. He didn't realize it, and the recording is magnificent.
