Re: whats the best mouthpiece? In the spirit of being unhelpful here's my answer: The one that works best for YOU. Ask your teacher. Try a bunch of different ones. Sorry, I just figured I'd beat everyone else to it. Forgive me if I left any of the other unhelpful answers. ML

| Fortissimo User | Re: whats the best mouthpiece? I'll "chuck" this one into the mix: find a dealer with one of those Warburton dealer kits. You can mix and match until you are blue in the face and then pick the best combo out of the mix. Either buy that combination or make note of it and find an equivalent in another brand. Don't forget the issues of varying gap and backbore shape; you really do want to get "as close as possible in all respects" if you are going to go with someone else's. |

Re: whats the best mouthpiece? go with sound and feel don't look at the numbers on the side of the mouthpiece. what gives you the sound you are looking for with reasonably decent intonation and you don't have to fight it.

Re: whats the best mouthpiece? First off, whoever told you a Schilke 17 was the same as a Bach 6 is full of it. Refer to Schilke's web page for a comparison of Schilke numbering to Bach numbering: Schilke Music Products - Schilke Trumpets and Mouthpieces Second, Tootsall makes a great suggestion - find (or buy) one of those Warburton mouthpiece kits with like 5 different tops and 4 or 5 backbores and play with them for a couple weeks. It will help you match up your playing needs with the right sized mouthpiece. Oh, and yes, the Schilke 17 is bigger than a Bach 3, significantly.

Re: whats the best mouthpiece? Someone named Best should produce mouthpieces. I can hear it now: "I use the Best 1C in all my work. It's the Best"!!! No more wondering what the "best" mouthpiece is. Oh, by the way. Last summer I got to talk to Forrest Buchtel, you know, the fellow the 14A4a was designed for. He got a chuckle out of my comment that he should have demanded a dollar from Schilke for every one of those 14A4a's they have sold. Rich Tomasek
