Re: Wooden Mouthpieces

sounds interesting. never tried one, but it's supposed to give a very warm tone. almost makes a trumpet sound like a flugel

Re: Wooden Mouthpieces

I have one in my massive box of mouthpieces i don't play. It is a Maurice Benterfa (MB) - Wood cup 1/2 (1 1/2 size) . i used to play this mouthpiece on Eb trumpet. I feel it has a real warm tone, almost like it has a lot less of the higher overtones in the sound. Keep an eye on the classified, you may see it there soon.

Re: Wooden Mouthpieces

It wood have to be made out of a very inert wood to keep the dimensions from changing during play. The idea of the throat and backbore shrinking a half hour into a concert does not appeal to me.
The second thought is bacteria nesting in this natural product..........

Re: Wooden Mouthpieces

Yeah, I've seen them. Some guys from France brought them over when they came to my school many years ago. They feel very strange.

Re: Wooden Mouthpieces

I took a lesson in the mid 1980's with Anthony Plog at the Keystone Brass Conference. He played one of those Benterfa mouthpieces. They looked cool, came in different exotic hardwoods. I never got up the courage to get one, though.

Re: Wooden Mouthpieces

The backbore is metal I think.
I thought they used the same thread as the warburton tops.
I could be wrong though.

Re: Wooden Mouthpieces

Not quite the same thing, but I know that Alpen horns typically use wooden mouthpieces. I believe they are made of beech wood.

For trumpet, I think it would be an attention getter having a wood mouthpiece but I have to believe that the sound would suffer.

Stomvi used to make wooden bells for their screw bell trumpets.
