Wooden Mutes

Hey guys I thought I would pass this along. I’m a trumpet player but enjoy woodworking in my spare time. Well, I’ve finally found a way to join the two, by making wooden mutes. I was set to the task of making myself one about 4 years ago. At first I attempted to buy one prepaid but I could only find one or two companies that made them and they didn’t sound very good, also they were VERY expensive, most were $100, which is crazy. So I designed and built one myself, and was pretty pleased with the outcome. After building that first mute from red oak, I thought that it would be interesting to build them out of different types of wood. This motivation was for purely visual purposes only. However, I found that by using different types of wood, the sound changed and took on different characteristics and allowed me to pick and chose form a range of colors. Now, at the advice of my friends I have made these mutes available to the public. Feel free to visit my website and check them out. Each mute is handmade and guaranteed for life. The site is pretty new right now, but I’m going to try to get pictures of all mutes in each wood species up as well as put up some sound files so you can hear what they sound like. Feel free to email me and let me know what you think!! If any one reading this owns one of my mutes, feel free to post and let us know what you think!

Re: Wooden Mutes

Hi BH... Congratulations on being so inovative and good luck with the site and potential sales!
The only wooden mutes I have ever seen in the past were made by a fellow in South Australia. He was a gardener in his spare time and made mutes from gourds which he grew like pumpkins! Obviously every one was different, so they all had there own individual sound.

cheers

ashley

Re: Wooden Mutes

If their website is complete, budherseth2001 is not Bud Herseth, but Brian Horn. I think the poster is a bit misleading with the initials BH - Brian Horn would have been more up front - if not as noticable! This is not normally an issue for me, but there ARE commercial interests behind this thread and starting out misleading makes me suspicious. Bringing a renowned players name into the equation without permission or endorsement is not legitimate! Bud Herseth is not mentioned anywhere on their site!

I wish Mr. Horn luck with the very attractive looking mutes! I remain suspicious!

Re: Wooden Mutes

Can you remember the name of the company that makes the mutes with the lever on them for adjusting the pitch.
Is it Entemann? or is that a brand of American cake?
