![]() | Wooden Sleeve Sound Enhancement System Does anyone have any experience using this mouthpiece sleeve? I am thinking of getting one. I play a bach strad and use a GR 67M mouthpiece and also have weighted bottom valve caps on my trumpet. I play mostly in a jazz combo and big band jazz group and sometimes in a latin jazz group. I have a nice tone, but this sleeve looks so cool, it makes me want to try it out. Any feedback would be great. The sleeve is by J. Landress. Thanks... Here is what it looks like: http://jlandressbrass.com/wsses.jpg Last edited by sachmo; 07-01-2009 at 03:40 PM. |

![]() | Re: Wooden Sleeve Sound Enhancement System Ive never played with a sleeve although i am ordering one...all i can tell you is sleeves reduce the amount of vibration thus giving you a deep tone...it can somewhat compare to like a yamaha heavy weight mp and depending on the sleeve can help with high notes.... if you want a sleeve try an sound sleeve that Curry makes... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Wooden Sleeve Sound Enhancement System I have made quite a few models of wooden sleeves, both with brass and aluminum parts for my Taylor Roar Sound System. ![]() ![]() ![]() Those does only change the feel and sound of the horn as Wilmer says. My personal experience is that the wooden sleeves work best from top of the staff and downwards.

![]() ![]() | Re: Wooden Sleeve Sound Enhancement System There have been no known scientific tests that proove what a sleeve does to the sound. The way that the extra weight is mounted on the mp, losely and with some screw or similar, will guarantee that this weight in a mecanical/physical way never will be a real part of the mp. The result with a losely mounted sleeve therefore will NOT be the same as if the mp had been cut out of one piece of metal. I fact, with some bad luck, extra resonance fenomena, due to the lose mounting and maybe the small cavities between mp and sleeve, could occur. Very counterproductive! A CONTRADICTION: "my wooden sleeve gives me so much better sound due to the extra weight". QUESTION: how much extra weight do you think a wooden sleeve gives? If you want some extra weight, why don´t you use a brass or lead sleeve? I agree vith SolarBell when he says: In fact, I´ll even go further: If you like the "cool" way they look, then buy one, but be aware that your tone actually could suffer. These sleeves should not be taken seriously as long as noone dares to present lab. measurements of their influence on tone quality etc.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Wooden Sleeve Sound Enhancement System This system allow you to be as close as possible to a "one piece" heavy top mp with exchangeable sound sleeves. No small screws, no rubber o-rings, no tools needed. And best of all: A copy of your favorite mp can be converted to the system... ![]()

![]() | Re: Wooden Sleeve Sound Enhancement System Thanks for all the feedback. As it turns out, the wooden sleeve I was interested in will not work with heavy mouthpieces, like my GR. So I guess it's a "mute" (ha ha) point. It does look cool though. I like my tone and practice regularly to keep it. I guess I could always look to a Bob Reeves C2J mouthpiece for a darker smoother tone. But that's why I have a flugelhorn. I've never used a sleeve before, and frankly don't like how they look. But when I saw the one by J Landress, it made me curious about it. Landress emailed me and told me he was working on a version for heavy mouthpieces. But why add more weight to a heavyweight mouthpiece? |
