World's Best Mutes!

Manny and other's,

I'd like to know, which mutes are "best" for certain types of playing (from your own experiance and your own opinion).

I'm going on a mute shopping spree this summer because I'm getting joked with for using my Dennis Wick removeable cup mute for my straight mute :)

Ok, copy and paste this and let me know! REMEMBER I only want general answers, not specific mutes for certain pieces of music because that would take to long...

Straight Mute

1. Loud playing (ex: opening to pines of rome)
2. Soft playing (ex: La Mer solo's)

Cup Mute

1. A general answer of what you think is best for all around types of playing would be great.

And any other mutes that you like for any other kind of playing that aren't the standard, preferably straight or cup...

Thanks!

Jeremy

I don't know the brand name but they are very light wooden mutes that I have bought in Köln, Germany at the big music store a couple of blocks from the Dom cathedral. Anybody know what I'm describing?

The classic: Humes & Berg Stonelined cup mute

Hi Jeremy,

Alessi Vacchiano G by Leblanc (as stated). definitely a staple, if you own one this is the one to own.
Harmon straight - slightly brighter and tinnier (more 20's ish) but loud and defined.

2. Soft playing (ex: La Mer solo's)
Tom Crown - a darker less defined sound – good for soft passages.

PS: I have played the light wood straight mute, but the concept (like an older “cardboard-style”) sounds very interesting and with a light quality wood I would be interested to see one again. If anyone has a line on a source please post it.

Cup Mute

Without question - The classic: Humes & Berg Stonelined cup mute

Re: World's Best Mutes!

For years we've used Jo Ral straight mutes (around $30) for loud playing and TrumCor Lyric mutes (around $55) for soft playing, and for the $$$ it's hard to beat that combo. I also own several other pricier wooden mutes and other newer design soft mutes, but the TrumCor beats them all for general all around playing.

The TrumCor Cup Mute is nice, but rather expensive. It has an adjustable cup that changes the volume and color slightly.

At BF this matter was discussed already, and I think that it was on TM as well. You may find this link useful Brass-Forum.co.uk

That's the point, Nick, I don't know. The mute is not stamped. All I know is it's a blond wood, very light, and available at Tonger Musik in Köln. We just refer to them as the "Woodies" because there's no name or sticker. We have three of them and every time I've been in Köln, I've bought at least one. One more and I'll have a complete set of four.

Re: World's Best Mutes!

For now, I use one straight: a Tom Crown all copper.

Harmon: Jo Ral

Cup: Jo Ral, although the Denis Wick adjustable is interesting to me.

I'll be in for some this May at ITG, so on my wish list is the Hickman Sotto Voce, D.W. cup, and TrumCor. (I have an ITG allowance...)

Straight Mute

1. Loud playing (ex: opening to pines of rome) Tom Crown all copper I also have a MB because the Ton C. doesn't work well in the big bell Monette
2. Soft playing (ex: La Mer solo's) I don't have one

Cup Mute

1. A general answer of what you think is best for all around types of playing would be great. Denis Wick and I think it works well for a straight mute

And any other mutes that you like for any other kind of playing that aren't the standard, preferably straight or cup...
