Yamaha 2330S Second valve

I just bought a Yamaha 2330S silver cornet from a pawn shop. It is in really beautiful shape and looks like it's hardly been used. If it helps, the serial number is 201963A. I knew it had a problem when I bought is so it isn't like I got it with my eyes shut. Supposedly, the #2 valve was stuck. Well that's not quite right, after taking the entire instrument apart and cleaning it, it appears to me that the #2 valve it is just plain the wrong valve. Looking at it one can see there is a lot of wear on it and in an odd place, the bottom. I can put either of the other two valves in the center tube and they go in easily but this valve just stops and I'm not about to force it. It sure looks like the others but it just cannot be. So what I need to do is find a new #2 valve for this horn. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Dottie in RI

Re: Yamaha 2330S Second valve

Since the other valves go into the center tube,
the center tube might be OK, so could it be
that valve nr.2 actually is a bit bent?

Re: Yamaha 2330S Second valve

You could CAREFULLY swap valve stems from piston 2 with piston 1 or 3. I could see a bent stem causing this, although that problem should be pretty visible. If it still sticks, try swapping valve guides. Keep track of which one goes where so you can put it all back. This is a well-worn instrument, and you don't want to make things worse by mixing up all the hardware.

Myself, I just think the piston is defective, or the player presses valves down at an angle and this caused #2 to wear prematurely.

Re: Yamaha 2330S Second valve

I think the piston is the wrong piston. For the life of me I don't know how you lose a piston and then replace it with the wrong piston? Maybe it was just stuck in there to leave it at the pawn shop? All the other parts look the same as the other pistons except the lower section. It's just got to be the wrong one. I did buy the horn cheap so I ordered a new piston from Yamaha. Duh, should have thought of looking there. Just for jollies I pulled a piston out of my Holton and it fit the Yamaha the same way as the original defective piston. I am going to mic it and see what size it really is. I'm hoping the casing is fine. It looks ok, but playing will tell. I love a puzzle. Dottie in RI

Dorabil.

I'd follow the observations and advice from Sofus and operagost. Then report your findings back here for them (and others) to provide further advice. If you enjoy puzzles, you are aware that sometimes you prod along methodically 'til all the pieces to fit. Hope you find the solution.

Best wishes,

Lloyd

Re: Yamaha 2330S Second valve

I did Lloyd, but to no avail. The lower half of the piston is just too big. It isn't stuck, it just plain won't go in. I took all the pistons apart and gave them a bath. There was some black crud in there. What was interesting was the spring for #2 was a half inch longer than the springs for #1 and #3 which seems to tell me something doesn't belong. Everything is now well cleaned and oiled and awaiting the new piston. It's odd, the #2 piston looks just like the other two, but evidently it is not.

Re: Yamaha 2330S Second valve

Dottie,
You might like to roll the valve along a sheet of quality plate glass - a good quality table top might suffice (I guess it doesn't have to be your glass) and with a flashlight (torch) behind the valve as you roll it see if there are inconsistencies showing perhaps a 'bend' in the valve. I know it doesn't solve the problem but it would be really interesting to find the cause of the binding.

Re: Yamaha 2330S Second valve

Does the 2nd piston go in the casing from the bottom?
If the horn was stored improperly the 2nd valve slide might have had pressure put on it, distorting the casing. Fixing it is pretty easy if done by a compotent tech.

Re: Yamaha 2330S Second valve

I had the same problem with my Yamaha a couple years ago, except it eventually got to where all three valves were doing the same thing. Meijer Music said that it wasn't worth even trying to fix, but I imagine with only one valve it should be worth it :) I hope you figure it out!!

Re: Yamaha 2330S Second valve

Well I never did figure out exactly what is wrong with the #2 piston that came with this horn. BUT today the new piston arrived along with 3 new springs and valve guides, a few new felts and corks. I put it all together, oiled her up and I can now report that I have the sweetest little horn I ever had. It would have been a shame to let this one go.
