Yamaha Shew question

I play on a Yamaha Shew Lead. It works great as a lead mpc, but would like to find a compatible deeper cup more open backbore piece for other types of playing. Are there any Shew Lead players out there that might have a suggestion?

Thanks

I must admit I haven't tried it myself, but have you considered the Shew "Jazz?" Unless I'm mistaken it's supposed to be a deeper "match" for the "Lead." Have a good night.

I play the Shew Jazz and love it. I play small ensemble Jazz work and not lead on it though. I like the back bore in comparison to the standard Yamaha.

I have read numerous sources which say that the Shew Jazz is a larger diameter than the Shew Lead, so it really is not a "match".

By the way, I have also repeatedly read that a Shew Jazz is just a Bach 3C for which they are charging much more than you'd pay for a Bach 3C.

Re: Yamaha Shew question

I have both mpcs and there's no comparing them. One is a shallow, narrow rimmed lead piece, the other a moderate sized rim, easier bite 3C. I use the Jazz for legit albeit on a different horn but the lead sizzles, and again, has a much narrower rim, more like a Giardinelli 10S, perhaps a bit narrower than a Schilke 13a4a.

The 3C SEEMS just like the Yamaha Shew Jazz, but the Shew's got a slightly brighter quality for me and an easier bite for sure.

I was playing lead on the Yamaha Shew Lead piece and could get a great tone in all registers, but I, too, switched to another piece. I went into a lesson with Rob Parton and basically tried a hundred different combinations of mpc tops and backbores. I finally found my favorite being a Warburton 5SV top and KT backbore. The 5SV gives me a great lead/commercial sound in the upper register, but the cup is deeper than the shew. Depending on where you live, see if you can make an appointment at a mpc factory. Karl Hammond just set up shop down the street from my hometown of Downers Grove. Go into a factory with a few mouthpieces you like to play on. Maybe get a custom piece that combines the rim, cup, backbore, etc. from different mpcs you enjoy.

I almost did that....

Then I realized I'd rather keep my arm in lieu of buying a Warburton mouthpiece

But Warburton is very nice for choosing the peice you are looking for...and finding its equivalent in other brands...

Re: Yamaha Shew question

Thanks for your replies...hope to hear more ideas. I borrowed a Shew Jazz to play in the pit for a musical...didn't work for me. Definitely too big. I did like the sound, but tired out too quickly with the significant diameter difference. Then, I borrowed a Warburton 4SV top and a 4M top from a friend. Ended up really comfortable with the sound and feel of the 4SV with a 4 backbore. I lose a bit of range, but I don't need it and much as I need the sound and the accuracy. The diameter of the Shew Lead is .454 and the 4SV is .460. Not too bad.

Re: Yamaha Shew question

Also, has anyone played the Marcinkiewicz Shew 2.0? I'm wondering if it might be a deeper alternative, too.

Wow, I had no idea they were so different! Well, you know what they say about assumption...in all seriousness I wish you the best of luck in your search.
