![]() | Yer basic 7c Just a quick question (which I am sure has been asked or answered a million times before).. I want to get a 'proper' quality basic 7c. The one that came with the horn looks a bit like a spare part off a motorbike, and rather than start fretting about all the many things involved in changing this and that, I'd like to get a very good quality basic piece for my very cheap horn that will last me well into the future. I am lucky that I have a decent paypal balance to spend, and am prepared to shell out whatever it takes to get a professional bit of kit. Are there any recommendations as to makers I should look for

![]() | Re: Yer basic 7c It costs more than 5 bucks in England for a Bach! That said, a Bach 7C is probably a good starting point. They're reasonably cheap, which means you won't be out of pocket when you invariably decide that you want to try something different and go on a mouthpiece safari. |

![]() | Re: Yer basic 7c Bach does seem to be coming out on top as 'The' choice of most people. Reading around the many posts and websites. The only variables I can see to that, is perhaps the benefit of having gold plate. Is that just a 'feel' thing (texture, warmth etc)? as I struggle to think it will affect the sound.

![]() | Re: Yer basic 7c Don't buy a Bach mouthpiece, they are inconsistent, and your lips just fall right into them.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Yer basic 7c Julius, It doesn't change the sound at all. I have both silver and goldplated MPCs - some silver ones I have had replated in gold - Benge 3C for example. The goldplated mouthpiece feels warmer and more slippery and I very much enjoy the feel more than a silverplated MPC. A lot of it has to do with the ability of the surface of the gold to hold a fine film of moisture (invisible to the eye BTW). Goldplated MPCs are a "little" more fragile because the surface is softer, but if you treat you MPC as you should this will never be a problem. I am so enamored with the goldplating that I have had #1 Son's Tuba MPC, and #2 Son's Trombone MPC goldplated (WTH it's only their inheritance), and they both love it too. There appears top be two different era "Bach" mouthpieces - the old ones - now known as Benge, and the newer ones which we normally call the Bach (I think this is correct) - mine are the Benge ones made by UMC {these come with a fancy little blue plastic mouthpiece 'purse' BTW}.

![]() ![]() | Re: Yer basic 7c Try a bach 7C , Schilke 11 or if you can find one a Giardinelli 7C , their all reasonably priced and used by both amateurs and pros. Last edited by Al Innella; 07-31-2009 at 03:14 PM. |

that is a pretty bold unsubstantiated remark considering the hundreds of students I have had through the years with this exact mouthpiece. Who cares how consistent it is. Beginners are not switching mouthpieces between different horns. A 7 C has a slightly sharp rim, so there is no "slipping" around or fallinf in.

![]() | Re: Yer basic 7c Blessing makes a very nice low-priced 7C, priced substantially lower than the Bach 7C. The Blessing 7C has a somewhat softer "bite" on the inner rim than the Bach has, and has a little less mass. I find it a little more flexible and a bit more comfortable on my chops than the Bach. If I were maintaining a rental fleet of student instruments and needed good, cheap mouthpieces to include with the horns, these would be the ones.
