2006 Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands

The Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands was held at Cajun Field on the Campus of the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. 32 bands from throughout the State of Louisiana participated in this 2006 festival. Every band that attended this contest performed well. For many school this is an amazing accomplishment considering that 1-year ago many of these schools were closed due to devastation from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Some of the schools that performed were in areas where the schools were closed for weeks or months. Some of the schools did not reopen until the first week of school this year. Many families in these areas moved away, never to return back home.

The band directors in these areas must be given an amazing amount of credit for bringing the students back together as a musical family. Credit must be given to all of the students and their families for the dedication to rebuilding their lives, and for including music education as a major part of daily life.

I included 1-5 asterisks beside each band. 5 asterisks mean that there was massive hurricane devastation through out the entire area that feeds this high school. Less than 5 asterisks tell the overall effect of the storms on the area around that high school. Schools that have 1 asterisk did have some hurricane damage, but they also played an important role in the lives of the students from other areas by giving them a place to attend school until they could return to their homes.

Overall, it was a great day. There was an extreme amount of brotherhood shown yesterday. Nice things that happened yesterday the best of which were the reunions of student from Hurricane areas with the students and teachers at school where they attended school last year after the hurricanes. In many ways you could say that it was a major celebration of friendship and life.
