You guys were so well entertained by the vibration modes of flat plates that I thought I would post this clip from "21st century jet."

That is amazing... even moreso that the prediction was so close to the actual.

I wish I had a copy of the video that we made doing a "bird ingestion" test on a fan jet; we used guinea fowl fired from an air cannon into a running engine (JT 15D4..used on Citation II) and an ultra-high speed camera.

Those titanium fan blades waved like ripe wheat in the wind. They sheared off the inlet temperature sensor but kept right on spinning!

Okay...

...did anybody else notice the rubber duckie on the wing as it was being tested? It's in the first shot where the wing is being raised.

Pretty astonishing.

Manny, you can see the duckie clearly with 42 sec left to go as well.

It brought back memories of Junior High and this 16 year-old 6th grader who used to to the same thing to some of the guys. We used to stand around and watch too.

What happens with professional trumpets when they are stressed to 151%? Do the bells explode?

Well, here we are back at the "What if Superman played the trumpet?" thread.

The bells wouldn't explode because there's nothing that would provide enough resistance to create the back pressure that would need to be relieved by an explosion, right? Or is Superman strong enough a trumpeter to supercede that back pressure?

I would think the massive vibrations would cause the trumpet to disassemble before the explosion could happen. That's why I advocate the Kryptonite-laced alloy. The only problem with that is that Kryptonite is basically radioactive to Superman. Therefore, over time it would eventually probably cause cancer somewhere in Superman's body.

I guess we'd just better get used to the idea that if Superman plays, it's just going to be really loud. Would he keep the uniform for concerts or do something in a black and white ensemble?
