Advice needed on career change

Knowing that people on this forum have a variety of professions aside from music performance, can anyone give me advice of possible career changes from trumpet performance. I'm looking for a new career and am frustrated b/c a degree in music doesn't meet the requirements of most jobs.

From your own experience, can anyone suggest a field to being looking into?

Thanks so much for your time!

Your chance to get into the business world is through Sales IMHO.

Re: Advice needed on career change

I have a degree in trumpet and ended up selling hifi to the NATO military in Europe, then Apple then IBM AS/400 and mainframes. Now I am building a complete support department for a heavy industries company. Fortunately, I have always had the time and resources to follow my dream - playing trumpet!

There is no limits, except in ones own imagination. If you are not the sales type, you may want to look at learning how to program. There are a lot of companies looking for Java or Lotus Notes skills. The shoe has to fit and you will have to burn midnight oil regardless of what you choose, nothing is free or safe anymore!

Any switch will require at least a little bit of "re-credentialing". That could mean more school, it could mean climbing a ladder at a company, or both. Not knowing what your other interests are, it's tough to say. Career counseling isn't cheap, but if you're really stuck, it might help.

I've seen musicians switch to everything from massage therapy to arts administration to psychological counseling to finance to law to modeling to landscaping to IT to you name it. I know a bass clarinetist with a major orchestra with a law practice, and an oboist from my orchestra who went to work for Borders during a strike here, and eventually parleyed that into a gig with Bank of America.

As I read this, it occurs to me that I may know almost as many people with music degrees who AREN'T playing professionally as those who are!

Best of luck with your decision, Brent, in any case.

nope, it is my old airjna2. It is amazing how sneakers can improve getting high notes. Better than any heavy valve caps.

The highest notes I ever played were in La Paz though.

A change in career could also be in marketing. Imagine how much money the Air Jordan logo is worth................... Just imagine if there were an Air Jordan trumpet case................................

Re: Advice needed on career change

Of course it doesn't. A degree in music is pretty much worthless anywhere including the music world. Most jobs require at the minimum a 4 year degree. So at least you have that going for you. Good luck!
