Beverly Sills

NEW YORK - Beverly Sills, the Brooklyn-born opera diva who was a global icon of can-do American culture with her dazzling voice, bubbly personality and management moxie in the arts world, died Monday of cancer, her manager said. She was 78. It had been revealed just last month that Sills was gravely ill with inoperable lung cancer. She died about 9 p.m. Monday, said her manager, Edgar Vincent.

Re: Beverly Sills

Years ago in Baltimore, I had the honor to play "The Tales of Hoffmann" with Beverly Sills, Norman Treigle and Placido Domingo. Julius Rudel conducted members of the Baltimore Symphony.
This cast was as close to perfection as it gets. Treigle sang all the Basso roles in the opera. He was a tall, very slender man with one of the richest voices ever. Domingo was 35 years younger than he is today......what a voice!
And then there was Beverly Sills.
She also sang multiple roles. Her coloratura singing stole the show.
I am going to look for a copy of the opera.

Rest in Peace.

Re: Beverly Sills

I hear she had a great sense of humor. Her autobiography, "Bubbles" , has great stories, and is a very fun read.
What a great honor to get to play with a cast like that one! WOW!

She was an overnight success, she used to say, who worked for many years to get that overnight success! A great thing for us all to remember.

I'm so glad someone started this thead. I have such admiration for Beverly Sills, and recall when I was child listening to her on the radio talking about opera.

An extremely talented woman who was a wonderfully great sport as well.

I too remember watching her as a child. She was my introduction to opera. She will be dearly missed.
