| Big Band Stories Inspired by tpter1 I'd like to start with one of MY favorite 1st hand stories. In 1943 Sy Oliver, after leaving the Jimmie Lunceford band went to work for Tommy Dorsey and wrote many great charts for Tommie's band. One of the best was called "Well, Git It". It featured a trumpet duel between two of the hottest big band soloists, Ziggy Elman and Chuck Peterson. During the 60's Henry Mancini was in Detroit for a concert. He used a lot of Local 5 guys, and my dad was in the section. At one point during rehearsal, Mancini says "Put up the chart 'Well, Git It'". He looks at the trumpets and points to two of the guys and says "You be Ziggy Elman and you be Chuck Peterson." At which point.....Chuck Peterson says "Do you mind if I be Chuck Peterson being as I AM Chuck Peterson?" Completey floored Mancini and they had a great time. From my father's lips! -cw- BTW Chuck Peterson was one of my teachers...what a great player! Last edited by Solar Bell : 12-05-2006 at 02:47 PM. |
