Richard Oliver has a spectacular aura about
Black Dyke Band Recordings

Since I own none, best to acquire some.

I visited the Black Dyke's homepage and "Fantastic Overtures" and "Spectacular Classics Vol. 5" caught my eye.

Pricey at the better part of $70, and I figure its for a good cause.

Anything I should consider before buying?

I see iTunes sells "The Glory of Brass" for $17. Probably some fine music, and probably the Black Dykes need the money more than Apple??

Thanks,

Richard

Re: Black Dyke Band Recordings

I'm very much inclined to do so Nick. Thanks!

Also, Ed was nice enough to provide me with the BBC Radio tip, the show "Listen to the Band " BBC - Radio 2 - Listen to the Band Home Page
to which I'm listening now.

I also saw the "Further Information" link on the page and took a peek at the publication "4 Bars Rest."

Now y'all probably know about all this already, but I don't. I've looked the Bandsman site before, but never could really make heads nor tails of it.

According to "4 Bars Rest, it seems there's an influx of foreign cornetists at contest time and a bit of a hubbub ensues. Norwegans at that! I know it's deadly serious for those involved, but I can't help recalling the old PDQ Bach routine where a symphonic concert is broadcast over the radio as if it were a football match. Very Funny! So and so is being traded to another symphony for a bassonist and tuba player to be named later.

Actually the whole things sounds very cool to me. Much preferable getting worked up about Brass Bands battling it out on the field of battle (it's sorta pitched that way) than the Super Bowl.

We Yanks don't do this sort of thing. But the verve and passion are a bit luring nonetheless.

Richard

Take a listen at some of the Grimethorpe Colliery Band stuff. I prefer them to Black Dyke, although I can't really say anything bad about BD either. Grimethorpe has 12 or 15 recordings out, so there's plenty to choose from if you can find them.

Have a look on the shopping pages of http://www.4barsrest.com

It's a magazine site specifically for the British Brass Band Scene...

Re: Black Dyke Band Recordings

Richard,

Dillons have a collection of brass band CDs including Black Dyke. Jim Fox at www.ibowtie.com has streaming brass band radio on tap all the time. Fantastic.

Regards,

Trevor

PS Ah, the cut-throat world of competition brass banding. To paraphrase a famous football manager 'It's not life and death, it's much more important than that!!'

Dale, I was nosing through Brass Forum UK's threads on brass bands, and this youtube link was posted with some descriptions such as "stunning."

It's a montage with "war" as its subject and Grimethorpe's playing. Some work from Paganini's Variations arranged by Philip Wilby. I'm listening more than watching, and the playing is, well "remarkable" doesn't do justice.

Some of the images are disturbing given the harsh cost of war.

I thought I'd post the link because maybe some haven't heard the band you recommended.

Thanks for the link. Some of the images make you think, don't they? It's a "pretty good" band, to say the least. I find the hardest thing to play in brass band are the transcribed string parts. Too fast and many impossible fingering combinations. Well, impossible for me, anyway. These guys do a great job of it.
