![]() | Re: Congratulations Solar Bell I have been a Redwings fan all my life so I was thrilled....was hockey always this fast?????..... Redwings won the Stanley Cup the year I was born....1949.....almost 60 years ago!! and they won the league four years in a row.........I used to know the names of every player in the good old six team NHL. Now I just remember the best player of the day.......Gordie Howe...........when he was 47 years old he clocked up just over 100 points.......when he was 51 he played in all 80 games of the season. Anyone remember the wonderful protective equipment they wore in the old days........( I think they called it muscle).... certainly in the case of head gear it was none! Remember the itchy old sweaters....the smell? The goal keepers finally decided to wear a mask........it was to hide the fact that every inch of their faces had been stitched and protect the forwards from drawing blood every time they shot on goal! I would watch Gordie whenever he was on the ice, even away from the puck, the most lethal elbows in the game. Terry Sawchuck had over 500 stitches in his face, that when goaltending was dangerous. I do admit though, except for the lack of good fights I like the way the game is played now, or maybe I just like the way the Wings play the game. -cw-

![]() | Re: Congratulations Solar Bell Over here in the UK we get limited coverage..... I saw Gordie when he played an All Star game in Canada... he scored three goals that night and as many elbows...I suppose they just had to learn to survive those days.......... Walter |

![]() ![]() | Re: Congratulations Solar Bell My father grew up in Michigan, so needless to say, I grew up around news of the Red Wings. I think I truly became a Red Wings fan back when they had the Russian Five, A.K.A. the Wizards of OV. I had my own nickname for them, the Red Vings. Fedorov, Fetisov, Konstantinov, Larionov, Koslov. What a group ! Here's an old clip of the guys ! YouTube - Red Wings Russian 5 Fedorov Konstantinov Larionov Hockey Vid
