Manny Laureano has a spectacular aura about
D-Day

Hey, all... today is D-Day.

Let's take a moment to remember the fallen and the beginning of the end of the Nazis as a result of the combined efforts of the Allies.

G-d bless the military that keep us free.

Okay, so, today was D-Day or, more correctly put, the 62nd anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy.

Interesting.. someone was commenting on TV last night during a bit of a documentary... Winston Churchill never referred to "the battle" ahead... it was always "the fight". Reason? Because "battle" has its roots in the French language. So does "retreat".

Having said that, it certainly wasn't all French who subscribed to the Vichy government! D-day could have been much more "interesting" if it hadn't been for the actions of the French underground. I was fortunate enough to live in northern France for four years as a kid and spent some time (Boy Scouts) hiking about the countryside... it was always a shock to come around the corner of a hill, or out from behind a bunch of bush and find an enormous, concrete and steel "pillbox" or "bunker" hidden away in the underbrush. 15, 20 years after the war ended they were still finding munitions in farmers' fields.

In a way, although Dieppe in 1942 was a disaster (out of a Canadian force of 4,963; 907 men were killed, 586 wounded and 1,946 taken prisoner... and that doesn't include Britain or the other Commonwealth countries involved) the lessons learned served the D-day planners well.

Toots,

God Bless the Canadians. I worked with the Canadian Army Reseerves during the '80s. What they lacked in equipment, they certainly made up in spirit and fighting skills.

I want to personally thank all Canadians for their valient efforts in saving American lives during the Iranian hostage taking. Their bravery during that terrible time can never be repaid. They are truly a great nation.

Thank you all.

Thanks for the reminder, Manny. It's important for us to remain cognizant of these important events in our history; we all too often forget too easily.
