DCI San Antonio
The Southwestern Championship
San Antonio (evening), TX
July 22, 2006

Place Corps Score

1 The Cavaliers 92.550
2 Blue Devils 92.000
3 Phantom Regiment 90.150
4 Bluecoats 89.050
5 The Cadets 88.300
6 Santa Clara Vanguard 85.225
7 Carolina Crown 85.000
8 Boston Crusaders 84.275
9 Blue Knights 83.975
10 Madison Scouts 81.725
11 Glassmen 80.700
12 Spirit from JSU 79.300

By the time they get to Cookville and Atlanta next weekend Phantom will move up at least another point, maybe two points. The Cadets will be 2 points stronger and the Bluecoats will break 90. That puts 5 strong corps in the hunt.

Remember that I said on July 21:

"As for me, my money is on Phantom, Cadets, and Cavaliers as a trifecta! BD will do well to come in 4th."

Phantom moved up 1.85!

Cadets almost made 2 points, moving up 1.85.

The Bluecoats moved up to 90.752, an improvement of 1.675. I wonder if I need to put them in my trifecta instead of the Cadets? (As for now I'll stick with the Cadets 3rd, and Bluecoats 4th at finals.)

Blue Devils only moved up 1 point, and the Cavaliers moved up .475.

There is basically 1 point separating the top 3, and less than 3 points separating the top 5. Oh how I wish I could be in Madison! This will be one of the best finals weeks ever!

I know that it’s not always the most popular thing to say on this board, but I love DCI! I don’t think that marching band should be shoved down the throats of high school kids across the country, but the people who march corps are fanatics and they are in this because they love it! It is the ultimate display of what young people can do when they strive to do well. You might not like their style, and you might hate marching of any type, but if you watch the top corps you have to admit that they do what they do very well!

Well, Phantom won in '96, so what do they say about years ending in 6?

That's correct, and in 1989 SCV won even though Phantom was much better. Politics -- Yuk!!!! and the there is no place where politics plays a bigger role than in DCI.

I thought that Phantom should have won it several years when they didn't win. I thought that there were several years when Cavies should have won when they didn't. The point of this is that there were also years when the Cavies won but shouldn't have, SCV won but shouldn't have, and Diablo Azul won but shouldn't have.

Half of the fun in watching DCI is paying attention to the politics and how they affect the overall scoring. Anyone who doesn't think that politics plays into the overall scoring is nuts!!!

I couldn't agree more. Not just in the top tier either. Madison in 6th place in '96? I think not! The crowd was so angry and booed so loudly that the announcer had to wait a while to continue.

Quarterfinals in '04 was very political as well. They scored SCV too high in brass and were forced to give BD a perfect score in that caption. Even as a fan, I can say they definitely weren't perfect.
