![]() | It drives me nuts! What's the difference between . . . When reporters and mic jockeys on TV use incorrect terms to describe things they know nothing about, it drives me nuts! Someone can say "nappy" and get fired. Another can say the "fa__" word and be called homophobic. My rant here is about a totally different situation, but one that still upsets those of us who understand these things . . . and makes me thing those reporting this story are both ignorant and ill-informed. My gripe is the word "clip" being used by reporters when talking about "magazines" used in firearms. These two items are NOT the same thing! Clips are simple little metal holders of rifle or revolver rounds. Magazines are totally different; enclosing the ammo, keeping it clean and then using their springs to force the ammo up, and out of the magazine and into the chamber . . . ![]() According to reporters tonight, the VT killer bought "clips" for his .22 on ebay. That .22 pistol doesn't use clips, it uses magazines. T. |

![]() | Re: It drives me nuts! What's the difference between . . . Yep, I heard the word "arsenal" today too, when a reporter mentioned the killer had bought some 10-round .22 "clips" to go with his "arsenal." Heck, one network pictured a Sig-Sauer for the first day, as they described the 9mm Glock as the main handgun. Well, it is about dark and I'm getting ready to walk my sweet little Boston Terrier, so I guess I'll have a "half" an arsenal with me when I put on my .45ACP pistol. It uses a MAGAZINE. Then again, I guess I could tote either my .45ACP or .40S&W revolver . . . you snap six rounds into thin metal CLIPS (as seen in this photo). ![]() Why tote to walk the dog? To protect my little dog. One nut in the neighborhood keeps (feeds) a bunch of stray dogs, including a 125lb.+ 50/50 Rottweiller/Chow mix that's brutally killed my son's cat, along with other animals . . . and I have to walk by that house each day. That dog is feared by all the neighbors . . . but I refuse to have to stop walking in the neighborhood because of a crappy neighbor and her dog! T. |

![]() | Re: It drives me nuts! What's the difference between . . . Don't even get me started about the laziness of the media! I learned about the difference between clips and magazines from an unlikely source: Minnesota governor, Jesse Ventura! Before he was governor he had a radio show and expressed his indignance at people's ignorance at calling a magazine a clip and I haven't made that mistake since! I don't even refer to a rifle as a gun because of an article I read about a soldier who called his rifle a gun. He was made to stand nude in the hot sun and repeat for a solid hour, out loud, "This is my rifle, I called it a gun. That's why I'm standing here nude in the sun!" I have not called it a gun since that time and I think I was about ten. That's one of the reasons I'm persnickety about media types and thir writing/speaking styles. I communicate through a trumpet for a living and value language as something, well... important! ML |

![]() | Re: It drives me nuts! What's the difference between . . . Also keep in mind...people like this also write about music and musicians. Do I need to elaborate here? How many of you have stories about that?

![]() | Re: It drives me nuts! What's the difference between . . . I think every time I've ever seen a news story that I have personal knowledge of or was involved in somehow, there were factual errors. Minor errors, yes, but enough that I have to assume that most stories have little things like that. Annoying... Jason. PS, To be fair, this thread is the first time I've ever heard that there was a difference between a "clip" and "magazine" or "rifle" and "gun." It never even occured to me that clips and magazines would be different. Fortunately, I'm not a reporter or a gun enthusiast!

![]() | Re: It drives me nuts! What's the difference between . . . I couldn't help noticing a similiar mistake here in the lounge. A new thread is talking about Pachelbel's 'cannon'. Now some of us have played that piece so many times that we become violent at its mention, but wouldn't a smaller weapon work here?
